About the Role

Ortu Software is hiring a PHP Developer to build and maintain WordPress websites and custom PHP applications. Youll develop features, customize themes and plugins, integrate third-party services, and troubleshoot issues on live projects. Youll work with project managers, designers, and QA to take changes from requirements through testing and release.

Key Responsibilities

• Build and maintain features for custom PHP applications using an MVC framework.
• Develop and customize WordPress themes and plugins using WordPress hooks and APIs.
• Write MySQL queries, troubleshoot data issues, and integrate third-party APIs.
• Diagnose and fix issues across PHP and JavaScript.
• Upgrade PHP versions and project dependencies, check compatibility, and test affected features in staging before release.
• Use Git to manage code changes, follow secure coding practices, and document changes that affect deployment or ongoing support (Preferred)

Required Skills and Experience

• At least 2 years of hands-on development experience with PHP, MySQL, and JavaScript.
• Practical experience with at least one PHP MVC framework, such as Laravel, CodeIgniter, or CakePHP.
• Hands-on experience building and customizing WordPress themes and plugins.
• Solid understanding of object-oriented PHP, SQL, HTML, CSS, and REST APIs.
• Ability to write readable, maintainable code and troubleshoot issues methodically.
• Clear communication skills and the ability to manage assignments, flag blockers early, and meet deadlines.

Preferred Experience

• Shopify development • Theme development and customization using Liquid, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, including custom sections and theme settings. Experience with Shopify APIs or third-party app integrations is a plus.
• WordPress/WooCommerce • Store customization and third-party integrations.
• AI-assisted development • Experience using Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or Codex to build features, debug issues, or write tests. Ability to explain AI-generated code, review it for security and compatibility, and test it before merging.
• Application maintenance • Experience upgrading legacy PHP applications or maintaining live client websites.
