Physician- Chief Geriatrics & Extended Care

The Chief, Geriatrics & Extended Care (GEC) executes leadership characterized by substantial and continuous responsibility and accountability for population groups or integrated programs that cross service and/or discipline lines, influence organizational mission, health care, and policy in the VA Salt Lake City Healthcare System.

The Chief of GEC Responsibilities- Program oversight including oversight of strategic planning for: Home-Based Primary Care (HBPC) Community Living Center (CLC) Palliative Care program Coordinated Transitional Care (C-TraC) Dementia Systems of Care Supervisory Duties: Customer Service: Plans the provision of services with a patient centered vision (in alignment with VHA guidelines and policies) so as to enhance patient education and shared decision making. Establishes a customer-oriented culture and promotes hiring of persons who fit that culture. Actively identifies and encourages the implementation of best practices in customer service. Empowers staff to resolve problems and complaints independently at the lowest level. Budget and Fiscal Management: Responsible for the financial management of the service, including budget oversight, planning, and management. Develops the annual strategic and budget plan for the service consistent with guidance and goals from the Director's Office and/or Fiscal Service, and oversees its execution and monitoring for complications. Develops and implements tracking methods to monitor the service's fiscal and other key operational activities. Under the direction of the VA WCHCS governance structure, collaborates with other service chiefs in the development and execution of the overall Medical Center strategic and business plan. Plans initiatives and develops programs in collaboration with other services to ensure coordination of service, reduction of redundancies, and enhancement of cost effectiveness, efficiency and overall productivity. Team Building: Develops a team that is technically competent and understands the interrelationships of all the medical center services in achieving the mission. Develops a team that is creative in its efforts to build and maintain a patient-centered, cost-effective, integrated health care system. Builds partnerships with the community to enhance Medical Center goals. Human Resources Management: Responsible for assuring appropriate action in such matters as promotions, selections, rewards and recognition, training, and problem resolution as these actions relate to the service. Responsible for development and implementation of competencies, providing opportunities for continuing education, peer review, career development and professional enrichment for service employees. Maintains good labor-management relations with the unions to resolve personnel problems, proactively plan for changes to the work environment, and develop a high reliability workforce. Responds to changing priorities and resources with optimism, encouraging staff to respond positively and proactively. Clinical Responsibilities: Provides direct patient care, including Palliative Care and hospice consultations. Academic/Teaching/Training: Provides leadership, guidance, and consultation on staff education and development. Promotes best practices and evidence-based medical care, through staff education (by Chief GEC and by GEC staff presenting to other staff), and promotion of trainees/student/resident/fellow rotations through the GEC service.
