Physician Nephrology (Transplant)

The Transplant Nephrologist provides nephrology care, educates trainees, and maintains effective professional relationships to support high-quality patient care. Physicians must hold an MD/DO from a VA-approved school, complete an ACGME residency, and maintain an unrestricted U.S. license. Board eligibility/certification in Internal Medicine and Nephrology is required.

Serves as staff attending for the Transplant Nephrology consult service as assigned and participates in the Transplant Nephrology peer review process when requested. Completes all medical record documentation, encounters, and trainee supervision attestations in the electronic medical record within prescribed timeframes; documents and rates administrative and clinical information thoroughly and accurately. Participates in the formal education of residents and medical students by presenting teaching rounds, lectures, and conferences focused on nephrology and kidney transplantation. Assists in the development and implementation of education and training programs for medical students and residents rotating through the Medical Service's accountable Transplant Nephrology Clinical Services. Provides guidance, support, and supervision to nurse practitioners, medical students, and residents (interns, residents, and/or fellows) assigned to Transplant Nephrology and related subspecialty services and clinics, according to facility standards and as assigned by the Chief, Medical Service. Revises work schedules and assignments to meet frequent, abrupt, and unpredictable changes in prescribed workloads and deadlines to meet patient care, healthcare, and agency needs. Follows agency and Service-level expectations for time/attendance and modification of clinical duties for planned leave. Supports the medical center-wide research mission, especially as it relates to nephrology and kidney transplant care and encourages research participation among other staff members. Assists in conducting studies regarding nephrology and kidney transplant treatment modalities, outcomes, and other aspects of patient care when appropriate.
