Physician - Primary Care

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application.

This position is located within Medical Service, at the Adam Benjamin Junior CBOC in Crown Point, Indiana as a member of the Primary Care and Ambulatory Care Service Lines and responsible for providing primary care for the veteran population in an outpatient setting. The Primary Care Physician is a licensed independent provider who is responsible for the management of patients while following VA clinical guidelines with documentation in the electronic medical record. You will work in a team setting with other physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and support staff assigned to perform duties to accomplish the treatment of our patients. Computer skills are essential as the VA CBOC is fully computerized for note documentation, entering orders and requesting consults. Specific duties include but are not limited to the following: Provides comprehensive care for Veterans for a panel size of approximately 1200 patients or serve walk-ins. Willing to undergo specialized training for the care of Women Veterans preferred. Perform initial histories and physical examination on outpatients using VVC technology and/or face-to-face visits Provide ongoing outpatient care for assigned patients Screen outpatients to determine the need for further care. Prescribe medications within defined scope of practice. Order diagnostic studies such as laboratory tests, x-rays, electrocardiograms. Review need for and order health promotion and disease prevention measures. Initiate response to and expediate request for consultations, special tests and studies. Provide education and counseling of patients and families in preventive care, medical conditions, and use of prescribed treatments and drugs. Program goals and objectives are provided. As an independent practitioner, the incumbent is responsible for planning and carrying out the assignment independently, resolving most of the conflicts that arise, coordinating the work with others as necessary, and interpreting policy on own initiative in terms of established objectives. In some assignments, the employee also determines the approach to be taken and the methodology to be used.
