Role purpose

The Piping Engineering Lead will lead and oversee the contractor’s piping engineering activities for offshore facilities, ensuring that piping layout, materials, and stress design meet the highest standards of safety, operability, reliability, cost efficiency, and schedule compliance. The role requires strong expertise across greenfield and brownfield offshore piping engineering, with particular emphasis on layout, materials selection, and stress analysis, while maintaining close coordination with internal stakeholders and EPC contractors.

Job context & key challenges

The role requires a comprehensive understanding of offshore greenfield and brownfield piping engineering, including layout development, materials selection, and stress analysis.

Major challenges include tight project schedules, interface management between greenfield and brownfield scopes, and ensuring delivery without compromise to safety, quality, cost, or schedule.

Continuous coordination with contractors and internal stakeholders is critical to mitigate constructability, operability, and execution risks.

Key accountabilities

  • Piping layout & offshore safety
Ensure offshore piping layouts meet industry codes, standards, and safety requirements, including accessibility, operability, and maintenance considerations.
Apply best practices to minimize risk to personnel, facilities, and the environment.
  • Cross-functional coordination
Maintain effective communication with multidisciplinary teams to ensure alignment on design intent, constructability, and project objectives.
Support resolution of layout clashes and execution constraints through early engagement.
  • Greenfield & brownfield engineering
Lead and review piping layout design for both greenfield and brownfield offshore facilities, including modifications, retrofits, and tie-ins.
Ensure operational continuity and safety when integrating new systems into existing facilities.
  • 3D modelling & design visualization
Leverage 3D modelling tools to support layout development, clash detection, constructability assessment, and installation planning.
Ensure piping designs are practical, efficient, and construction-ready.
  • Materials engineering
Lead materials selection considering corrosion, degradation mechanisms, process fluids, temperature, humidity, and offshore environmental conditions.
Ensure compatibility of materials, coatings, and corrosion protection systems.
  • Cost-effective design solutions
Balance technical performance with lifecycle cost, material longevity, fabrication feasibility, and maintenance requirements.
Support optimized solutions that meet project budgets without compromising integrity.
  • Piping stress analysis
Ensure stress analysis is appropriately applied to maintain piping system integrity and safety.
Review and interpret stress analysis reports, considering thermal expansion, pressure, dynamic loading, AIV/FIV, and support design.
  • Engineering quality & compliance
Ensure piping engineering deliverables comply with applicable codes, standards, specifications, and quality requirements.
Support delivery in line with project safety, schedule, cost, and quality objectives.

Minimum qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering

Experience requirements

  • Minimum 8 years of total offshore piping engineering experience
  • Minimum 5 years of brownfield offshore experience, specifically in piping layout and design
  • Mandatory hands-on knowledge of offshore piping layout engineering

Technical & professional competencies

  • Piping engineering
Offshore greenfield piping layout design experience
Brownfield modifications, tie-ins, and retrofit engineering
Strong knowledge of international piping codes and standards
  • Stress & materials engineering
Understanding of piping stress analysis principles, FIV/AIV, and report interpretation
Experience with materials selection and corrosion control in offshore environments
Knowledge of materials compatibility with process fluids and environmental conditions
  • Project execution
Strong understanding of project execution requirements related to quality, safety, cost, and schedule
