Platform Engineer, Data Services
Summary
Build and run a CDS Hooks platform that integrates with EMR systems like Epic and NextGen, designing secure APIs and real-time data pipelines for clinical decision support.
Responsibilities
- Lead design and implementation of the CDS Hooks platform, including card orchestration and EHR-side logic integration
- Own CDS Hook API contracts and evolution, ensuring compliance with SMART CDS Hooks specifications
- Lead technical integration with EMR systems such as Epic, NextGen, Athena, and ECW
- Design, build, and maintain public-facing REST and event-driven APIs for clinical data and quality metrics
- Implement API security patterns including OAuth 2.0, scope-based authorization, and rate limiting
- Design and optimize real-time data pipelines to ensure low latency and high freshness for clinical decision support
- Establish reliability metrics and SLAs for API performance and CDS Hook delivery
- Partner with Data Engineering to align upstream data models with platform capabilities
- Mentor team members through design reviews and architectural guidance
Requirements
- 8+ years of experience designing and operating API platforms or backend infrastructure at scale
- 3+ years of experience with healthcare data integrations, EMR workflows, or interoperability standards (FHIR, HL7)
- 2+ years of hands‑on experience with CDS Hooks or SMART on FHIR
- Strong experience with REST API design, versioning, and authentication patterns
- Proficiency in modern backend languages such as Python, Java, or Go
- Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Databricks, GCP) and containerized services (Docker, Kubernetes)
- Proven ability to work in fast‑moving, ambiguous environments with healthcare regulatory constraints
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands‑on experience with CDS Hooks implementations in production healthcare environments
- Familiarity with FHIR resources, C-CDA, and claims data
- Knowledge of value‑based care metrics, HEDIS, and HCC/RAF risk stratification
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure‑as‑code
- Background in healthcare startups or high‑growth health‑tech environments
