The P.O.S.T. Certified Police Captain serves as a key leader within a dynamic law enforcement environment at a Level II Trauma Center. This position serves as the principal assistant to the Assistant Chief of Campus Police and provides operational oversight of police services, emergency response, security operations, and personnel management. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership, sound judgment, and a commitment to public safety, regulatory compliance, and exceptional customer service while collaborating with internal stakeholders and external law enforcement agencies. This position maintains 24-hour on-call responsibility during emergencies and plays a critical role in supporting the safety and security of the LSU Health Shreveport campus community.

Minimum Qualifications

Five years of law enforcement experience.

EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION:
Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will substitute for one year of the required experience. The maximum substitution allowed is 60 semester hours which substitutes for two years of experience.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.

Possession of a current Louisiana driver's license.

Possession of an active Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification may be required.

An applicant who has been convicted of a felony or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide leadership and operational oversight for Campus Police activities, ensuring compliance with state and federal laws, departmental policies, and organizational standards. Supervise personnel, assign work schedules, approve leave, conduct performance evaluations, and support departmental planning and resource management.

  • Direct and participate in law enforcement and public safety operations, including patrol activities, crime prevention, traffic enforcement, emergency response, accident and incident investigations, and maintaining the safety and security of campus facilities and surrounding properties.

  • Manage critical incidents and specialized security services, including arrests, suspect apprehension, patient escorts, protection details, emergency situations, and coordination with internal departments and external law enforcement agencies.

  • Promote community engagement and safety awareness through crime prevention education, public outreach, and other duties as needed to support the effective operation of the department and the safety of the campus community.
