Summary

Serve as a federal police officer at the Mount Weather Emergency Operations Center, enforcing laws, patrolling grounds, and responding to emergencies while carrying firearms and making arrests.

In this position you will work as a member of the Mount Weather Emergency Operations Center (MWEOC), Emergency Services Division, Police Branch. MWEOC is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, approximately 60 miles west of Washington, DC. The ideal candidate for this position will have experience maintaining law and order, protecting life, property, and civil rights of individuals, and national security information.

All MWEOC staff have emergency assignments and are considered deployed in place. Exercises and activations are planned and unplanned, and may require long hours, nights, weekends and holidays. All MWEOC employees are: (1) required to use a government-issued electronic device (to include cellular phones); (2) subject to recall during emergency situations; and (3) required to perform work in locations both above and below ground. What will I do in this position if hired? In this position, you will serve as a Police Officer maintaining law and order and security while protecting life, property, and the civil rights of individuals while protecting security information and programs from acts of sabotage, espionage, terrorism, theft or fire. The position has full authority to carry firearms and make arrests in order of compliance to federal, state, and/or local rules, regulations and procedures. Typical assignments include: Implementing emergency plans and enforcing federal laws and regulations for the protections of life and property while carrying firearms. Making arrests without a warrant for any offense, patrolling the facility grounds and structures to prevent and detect theft, damage, or unauthorized entry, monitoring alarm systems, closed circuit television systems, and telephone and radio networks, regulating pedestrian and vehicular traffic. Receiving and acting on calls concerning reports of breaches of the peace, violations, complaints, emergencies, accidents, and/or injuries, taking statements from persons involved and follows up on information obtained while serving obtained warrants and subpoenas issued under the authority of the United States, conducting investigations, on and off the MWEOC, of offenses that may have been committed against property owned or occupied by the federal government or persons on the property. Preparing incident reports and other appropriate documentation relevant to breaches of the peace, acts of violence, theft of federal or personal property, and other violations committed on federally owned or controlled property at the MWEOC and assisting federal, state, or local law enforcement officials in follow-up investigation. Conducting long and short-term investigations, completing investigations of all crimes (both felony and misdemeanor, investigating complaints, leads/tips, develops leads, obtains physical evidence, seeking out witnesses for questions, takes testimony, preparing reports, making recommendations and preparing cases for prosecution. What else do I need to know? At FEMA, our mission is to help people before, during and after disasters, and every employee at FEMA has a role in emergency management. Every FEMA employee has regular and recurring emergency management responsibilities, though not every position requires routine deployment to disaster sites. All positions are subject to recall around the clock for emergency management operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the official duty station, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee's official position description. Travel requirements in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature (weeks to months), with little advance notice, and may require employees to relocate to emergency sites with physically austere and operationally challenging conditions. Promotion Potential: Future promotions will be dependent on your ability to perform the duties at a higher level, the continuing need for an employee assigned to the higher level, and administrative approval.
