Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Trustworthy GenAI‑assisted Software Engineering

Western Norway University of Applied Sciences

Stillingstittel: Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Trustworthy GenAI‑assisted Software Engineering

Overview

This is a post‑doctoral position for up to three years, associated with the strategically funded TERSE project in the Department of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Mathematical Sciences.

Project and duties

The TERSE project develops actionable methods, guidelines and software tools to enhance software engineering with Generative AI (GenAI). The project explores how the profession‑oriented education and curricula in software engineering should be transformed in light of GenAI. A central element is industry and public‑sector collaboration to investigate the real‑world effects of GenAI in software engineering.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Working closely with the four work‑package leaders to coordinate industry collaboration and enable longitudinal, empirical studies of GenAI.
  • Developing and evaluating methods and tools that detect, prevent and mitigate faults in GenAI‑generated software.
  • Addressing research questions such as: measurable productivity and quality effects of GenAI in software engineering processes; development and application of dependable AI‑assisted development tools; best practices and methodology for trustworthy application of GenAI; and integration of GenAI into software engineering education.

Research environment

The postdoctoral researcher will be a key researcher in the TERSE project and part of the software engineering research group at HVL. The group includes professors, post‑doctoral researchers, PhD candidates and master students. The research group conducts high‑quality research presented at international venues and has a strong track record of externally funded projects with national and international industry partners. Work expense funding is provided for conference participation, travel and research visits, and equipment. The place of employment is Campus Bergen.

Qualifications

The successful applicant must have earned a PhD in informatics/computer science/software engineering or have submitted the PhD thesis before the application deadline. The PhD must be awarded before a position offer is made. The scientific profile should be within software engineering, preferably including the application of generative AI and machine learning in software engineering.

  • Quality and relevance of the PhD thesis.
  • Publication and project acquisition track record, quality and relevance of publications.
  • Practical software engineering skills, including experience with generative AI in software development or engineering of AI solutions.
  • Research network, industrial work experience and/or experience from industrial collaboration.
  • Ability to work at the intersection of theoretical, applied and empirical research.
  • Teaching experience and interest in curriculum development in software engineering education.
  • Research leadership potential: initiative, ability to write funding applications, lead research papers and advance research work.
  • Dissemination capacity; oral and written communication skills in English (or Norwegian).

Application

Applicants should submit a cover letter, up to five selected publications, copies of educational certificates and transcripts, and contact details of two to three references. A short research presentation may be required for shortlisted candidates. The application must be submitted through the HVL portal before the application deadline.

Benefits

  • Part of a strong international academic environment.
  • Inclusive work environment with dedicated colleagues.
  • Favourable terms in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund and employee benefits.
  • Position paid according to the Government’s salary regulation, code 1109 – Forsker (Researcher). A compulsory 2 % deduction to the pension fund applies.
