Practice Accountant - Part-Time
About Preston Accountancy Services
Preston Accountancy Services is an established independent accountancy practice based in Caerphilly.
For over 20 years, we have supported a varied portfolio of local businesses and individuals, including sole traders, landlords, tradespeople, owner-managed businesses and limited companies.
The practice has continued to grow through referrals and the acquisition of additional client portfolios. We're now looking for a Practice Accountant to join us on a permanent, part-time basis.
About the role
This is a varied general practice role working directly alongside the practice owner.
We're deliberately open on seniority. You might be an AAT-qualified accountant with around two years' practice experience who is ready for more responsibility, or an experienced QBE or qualified accountant looking for a flexible part-time role.
You'll initially spend time learning our clients, systems and processes, including some bookkeeping, VAT and payroll work.
As you settle into the practice, you'll increasingly take responsibility for accounts preparation, Self Assessment tax returns, Corporation Tax and other client work.
You'll receive support where needed, so we aren't looking for somebody who already knows every system or can do everything independently from day one.
What you'll be doing
Preparing accounts for sole traders and limited companies
Preparing Self Assessment tax returns
Preparing Corporation Tax returns
Preparing and submitting VAT returns
Bookkeeping and bank reconciliations
Taking accounting records through to trial balance
Providing payroll support and cover
Liaising directly with clients and resolving queries
Working across different accounting software packages
Supporting clients with general accounting and tax matters
Taking increasing responsibility for client work as you become familiar with the practice
Essential requirements
At least 2 years' experience working within a UK accountancy practice
Experience across general practice accounting, with exposure to areas such as accounts preparation, bookkeeping, VAT or tax
Previous experience using accounting software
Strong attention to detail and a commitment to producing accurate work
Good communication and organisational skills
Comfortable working independently while asking questions when needed
Able to work from our Caerphilly office on a part-time basis
If you have around two years' practice experience, you should be AAT qualified or at an equivalent level
Desirable requirements
Xero experience
Payroll experience
Experience preparing Self Assessment tax returns
Experience preparing limited company accounts
AAT Level 4, ACA or ACCA qualification
Formal ACA or ACCA qualification is not required. We are also very happy to consider experienced candidates who are Qualified by Experience (QBE).
Pay and benefits
£28,000-£40,000 FTE, pro rata depending on experience
Permanent part-time position
Flexible part-time working pattern
Company pension
Free on-site parking
Direct support from an experienced practice owner
Broad exposure across accounts and tax
Opportunity to take on greater responsibility as the practice grows
Potential for hours to increase over time
Working pattern and location
This is an office-based role in Caerphilly.
Our clients are predominantly local and regularly visit the office, so this position is not available on a fully remote basis.
We are flexible around how the part-time hours are structured and can discuss the working pattern with the successful candidate.
