Preservation and Safety Officer
Summary
Preservation and Safety Officers protect art, facilities, employees, and visitors at a museum, serving as first responders to incidents, conducting patrols, and enforcing access policies. The role combines security duties with hospitality, acting as a welcoming point of contact and supporting museum programming. No technical skills required.
Position Overview:
The core purpose of the Preservation and Safety (P&S) Team is to protect the safety of all employees and visitors and to preserve and protect the art that is both owned and exhibited in the museum, asl well as the physical structure of the institutional facilities and grounds. As a public face of the museum, the P&S Officer is responsible for providing a positive impression of the institution and supporting the museum by providing exceptional hospitality and creating personal, facilitated experiences for our visitors.
P&S Officers report to P&S Shift Supervisors and Managers.
Core Responsibilities:

Detect and deter: prevent loss and damage by being observant and respectfully enforcing museum policies and code of conduct with visitors and staff.

Report: document preliminary incident reports by recording observations, information, and occurrences and then giving complete report(s) to the P&S Shift Supervisor on duty.

Investigate and report to the Security Operations Center (SOC) all accidents, incidents, suspicious activities, safety and fire hazards, and other situations related to health and safety.

Act as first responder to alarms, medical emergencies, criminal and non-criminal incidents, and natural disasters.

Be familiar with and perform all post orders and routine interior and exterior patrols and enforce museum access control policies.

Act as a primary point of contact for employees and visitors, interacting in a positive and welcoming manner.

Be educated with the latest information regarding the museum’s events, public programming, collection, and exhibitions. Knowledge and use of email, apps and museum software will be required.

Maintain a neat, professional appearance, both in dress and in manner; department uniform required.

Demonstrate self-motivation and attention to detail.

Complete daily tasks in a professional manner, working collaboratively and cross-departmentally with team members for the most efficient execution of tasks.

Learn new skills and information when opportunities occur, including taking staff or docent tours of new exhibitions.

Be consistent and punctual; attend Preservation and Safety team briefings at the beginning of each shift as well as team meetings and trainings.
