Summary

The Principal AI Architect is responsible for designing, governing, and implementing enterprise AI/ML solutions that improve clinical outcomes, operational efficiency, workforce productivity, and business performance across Sanford. Serves as a technical leader, partnering with business stakeholders, clinical leaders, data teams, and technology teams to translate business challenges into scalable, secure, and compliant AI-enabled solutions.

The Principal AI Architect defines architecture standards, evaluates emerging AI technologies, and ensures solutions align with organizational goals, healthcare regulations, security requirements, and responsible AI principles. Combines expertise in AI, cloud architecture, data platforms, healthcare interoperability, and enterprise integration.

Job Description

The Principal AI Architect designs and implements enterprise AI architectures supporting: Generative AI, Machine Learning, Conversational AI, Intelligent Automation, Predictive Analytics, and Clinical Decision Support. Develops architecture patterns, standards, and reference designs for AI solutions. Creates scalable, resilient, and secure AI platforms across cloud and hybrid environments. Defines integration approaches connecting AI systems with enterprise applications and data platforms. Designs AI solutions that leverage healthcare data while maintaining privacy and security requirements. Architects integrations with healthcare and business systems such as EHR, ERP, HR, and collaboration platforms. Supports implementation of healthcare interoperability standards including HL7, FHIR, CDA, DICOM, and X12. Collaborates with data architects and engineers to establish AI-ready data pipelines and governance frameworks. Ensures AI solutions comply with HIPAA, HITECH, organizational security standards, and healthcare regulatory requirements. Establishes controls for model governance, monitoring, auditability, and responsible AI practices. Conducts architecture reviews and risk assessments for AI initiatives. Partners with cybersecurity, compliance, and privacy teams to mitigate AI-related risks. Evaluates emerging AI technologies, vendors, platforms, and frameworks. Develops recommendations regarding build-versus-buy decisions. Leads proof-of-concept and pilot initiatives for new AI capabilities. Stays current with healthcare AI trends and industry best practices. Partners with clinical, operational, and business leaders to identify AI opportunities. Translates complex technical concepts into business-friendly recommendations. Provides architectural guidance to engineers, developers, and data scientists. Participates in architecture governance and strategic planning activities. Contributes to AI education, adoption, and change management efforts across the organization.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering or a related technical field required. Master’s degree is preferred.

7 years of experience in solution architecture, application architecture, data architecture, or software engineering. 3 years of experience designing AI, machine learning, analytics, or automation solutions. Experience with cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud. Experience designing enterprise integrations using APIs, event-driven architecture, or middleware platforms. Experience working with complex enterprise systems and data environments.

AI and Cloud architecture certifications preferred.
