Principal Architect

Exciting new opportunity for a Principal Architect to join our Project Engineering/Architect Discipline which provides multi-discipline engineering team leadership and coordination across the engineering project lifecycle for Costain’s Nuclear and Defence sectors.

We are growing our Infrastructure engineering team for UK projects in the nuclear fuels and Defence sector. We are keen to hear from candidates with significant experience of acting in a Prinicpal Architect role at Concept/FEED/Detailed Design on sites containing major Nuclear process hazards and in highly regulated site environments.

As a Principal Architect Technician, you will be responsible for managing and developing the key work packages of a multi-disciplinary engineering design on major projects through the various stages of the project life cycle to meet the project schedule, budget, safety and quality requirements.

The role is based at our Manchester Office or Urenco Capenhurst Site with an expectation of office-based working for up to three days per week - our informal dynamic working policy allows all employees to discuss and agree flexibility to where, when and how they work based on individual preferences and subject to role, client, business and team requirements.

Key Responsibilities

To manage and develop key work packages of a multi-discipline engineering design on major projects through the various stages of the project lifecycle that are safe-by-design, sustainable, digitally enabled, cost-effective, compliant, technically sound and meet commercial delivery targets through:

Preparation and development of all project architectural deliverables or supporting information requested by Principal or Lead Engineers / Designers, for concept, statutory, regulatory, tender, and construction purposes, including but not limited to; models, drawings, diagrams, schedules and reports.

Producing, developing and managing the 3D model(s), ensuring compliance with the BIM Execution Plan (BEP).

Coordination with other disciplines, vendors and suppliers to ensure interfaces are clearly defined and accurately designed.

Working within a Common Data Environment (CDE) in accordance with the BIM Execution Plan (BEP) and undertaking all relevant QA/QC activities.

Ensuring that completion of all activities are executed within budget and schedule, while maintaining technical integrity, whilst further ensuring that any identified holds, blockers or challenges are reported in good time.

Ensuring that work is carried out in accordance with the Client brief, relevant design regulations, standards and procedures.

Assisting with future opportunities (tenders and bids)

Working and helping grow the Architectural Function within Costain Engineering Limited

Lead by example, displaying the Company’s values and behaviours, and commitment to the highest standards of safe and ethical behaviour, to ensure safe and reliable operations and client satisfaction.

Ensure that personal and corporate compliance with Health and Safety policy including company policy, relevant legislation, company and client’s requirements for Health, Safety and Environmental matters and to work in such a manner not to cause personal harm or injury to fellow workers, client and sub-contractors employees or the environment.

Work collaboratively with business development, work winning and marketing functions to develop and tender new opportunities. Developing and reviewing the engineering strategy; basis of estimate; engineering manhour estimate; schedule; risk register; engineering gates and technical proposal.

Support the Discipline Manager in developing and mentoring other members of the project engineering department.

Support the Discipline Manager in maintaining/improving project engineering corporate processes, including workflows, methods, competency, software systems and technical standards and ensuring project lessons learnt are effectively captured and embedded.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

Essential

Demonstrable proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, Navisworks, and MS Office.

An in-depth understanding of BIM, and BS EN ISO 19650.

Extensive experience working at Concept/FEED stages of the project life cycle.

Strong knowledge of design working practices, UK legislation and British Standards.

Strong technical detailing of architectural elements including but not limited to external and internal building fabric, and architectural elements.

Understanding of Designer duties under CDM 2015, the Building Safety Act, and an awareness of relevant legislation.

Strong interpersonal skills and an effective communicator (written & verbal) who is able to work as part of a team and independently

Must be able to work from the Costain Manchester Office a minimum 3 days a week and potentially 5 days depending on project security aspects

Mobility to travel to Costain/client offices, project sites and suppliers.

Eligibility to achieve SC clearance - UK Citizen or 5 Years UK Residency

Desirable

Experience in the requirements for CE marking of plant and equipment.

Strong engineering and business system/software skills

Civils, Structures and Infrastructure knowledge

Nuclear, Chemical or similar process industry sectors

Essential

Degree level qualification in Architectural Technology (BSc), Architecture (BArch) or similar professional qualification.

Or

Qualified to City & Guilds or HNC/HND level.

Minimum of 5 year’s experience in industry or practice

Desirable

Registration / chartership with relevant professional body (CIAT, RIBA, CIOB, etc).
