Principal Data Architect

Summary

Designs and maintains scalable data architecture, pipelines, and AI/ML foundations to transform raw data into actionable insights for a nonprofit/government org, integrating CRM, event, and LMS systems while ensuring compliance and scalability.

ASAE helps associations, and the professionals who lead, manage, and work in them, transform society through the power of collaboration. The Principal Data Architect will play a key role in advancing ASAE’s data insights initiatives by designing, building, and maintaining a comprehensive data architecture with robust data pipelines and automated solutions. This individual will focus on transforming raw data into actionable insights, empowering the organization’s technology infrastructure, and enabling smarter decision-making across teams. The data architect will address the increased demands for speed, agility, and integration to serve our members and customers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, build, and maintain robust, scalable ETL/ELT pipelines to support analytics, reporting, and operational systems.
  • Develop a flexible, scalable integration architecture to aggregate data from multiple internal and external sources, including CRM, event platforms, learning management systems, survey tools and more.
  • Collaborate with IT and other departments to support cloud infrastructure (e.g., Azure, AWS, GCP) and ensure data systems scale with organizational growth.
  • Build and maintain data models that align with business and analytics opportunities, ensuring reliability, performance, and security.
  • Deploy artificial intelligence/machine learning foundations to optimize the use of natural language processing and AI to enable innovation and acceleration, including advanced personalization and recommendations.
  • Ensure the implementation and integration of new data tools, platforms, and technologies as part of our evolving technology infrastructure.
  • Provide insight to cross-functional teams to identify opportunities for automation and process improvement within our data workflows.
  • Implement agile, product development processes to reduce risk, foster innovation, and create new opportunities for cross-functional collaboration and revenue generation.
  • Safeguard data quality, integrity, and compliance with relevant data governance and privacy standards.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Science, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Experience working in an association or nonprofit environment.
  • Proficiency in SQL and at least one programming language (e.g., Python, R, Scala).
  • Experience with ETL/ELT tools (e.g., dbt, Talend, Apache Airflow, Azure Data Factory).
  • Familiarity with cloud data platforms (e.g., Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift, Azure Synapse).
  • Experience combining data from diverse sources using common integration approaches.
  • Strong understanding of data modeling, warehousing, and architecture supporting structured and unstructured data.
  • Knowledge of machine learning, artificial intelligence, and natural language processing.
  • Familiarity with data visualization and business intelligence tools.
  • Knowledge of data privacy regulations relevant to associations.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to translate complex data into actionable insights.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with experience working in cross-functional teams.
