Principal Data Architect
Description
About XpertDox
XpertDox, Inc. is a physician-founded, venture-backed healthcare AI company headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona, with a global delivery team in India. Our platform, XpertCoding, autonomously codes outpatient medical claims directly from clinical documentation using neural networks, machine learning, and natural language processing. We serve outpatient healthcare organizations in almost all 50 states, with deep expertise in Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), womens health and OB/GYN practices, and behavioral health providers.
Position Summary
You will be the final decision maker on the companys data architecture, reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer. Your first job is to lead the move from a batch-oriented, file-based environment to a cloud lakehouse on AWS. The data comes from many healthcare clients, each with its own structure, and all of it is protected health information. It has to support both automated medical coding and natural-language questions from users across the company. You will start hands-on, with no direct reports: you design the architecture, build the critical parts yourself, and set the standards. Within 12 months, you will hire and lead the companys data engineering team, based in India, which runs the platform you built. This role is not for someone who has moved fully into people management and no longer builds, and it is not for someone who has designed a lakehouse but never carried a production migration through to completion.
Key Responsibilities
In this role you will:
- Own final decisions on data architecture: storage, table design, tooling, and how data moves between systems.
- Own the design and execution of the lakehouse migration, from source ingestion through the query and reporting layer.
- Design schema, partitioning, and table layout that hold up across many client datasets with varying structure.
- Build and harden ETL pipelines, including upsert and merge logic, scheduling, failure handling, and monitoring.
- Own data governance, access control, retention, and quality standards for protected health information (PHI).
- Set and enforce engineering standards for the data platform: code review, testing, deployment, documentation, and cost management.
- Own the data layer for the self-serve analytics platform, so it supports natural-language querying and reporting.
- Define and own the handoff between the analytics teams existing batch outputs and the lakehouse.
- Hire and build the companys data engineering team, based in India, within your first 12 months, and set the hiring bar for every data engineer who joins.
Required Qualifications
- Led at least one production migration from legacy or file-based systems to a data lake or lakehouse, carried through to completion.
- Currently or recently in a senior data leadership role (principal, lead, head, or director) at a product company operating at scale, with direct experience hiring and leading data engineers, while still personally designing and building.
- Deep hands-on experience with AWS data services, including S3 and serverless query and ETL tools.
- 10+ years in data engineering or data platform roles, with demonstrated ownership of architecture decisions.
- Experience making architecture decisions with incomplete information.
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong working knowledge of open table formats such as Apache Iceberg, Delta Lake, or Apache Hudi, and columnar formats such as Parquet.
- Strong Python and SQL skills; PySpark experience strongly preferred.
Experience designing for multi-tenant or multi-client data where schemas vary across sources. - Experience with data governance and security in a regulated environment, such as healthcare or financial services.
