Principal Data Center Design Engineer
About Us
We are an early-stage technology company operating at the intersection of Energy and AI infrastructure, focused on developing a new generation of efficient and scalable computing infrastructure.
Our approach combines distributed computing, modular infrastructure and energy efficiency to support the rapidly growing demand for AI and high-performance computing.
The company is developing a new model for deploying compute capacity in a flexible and scalable way, with a strong focus on efficiency, sustainability, reliability and responsible infrastructure development.
This is an opportunity to join a growing team at an early stage and contribute directly to the development of a new infrastructure platform, working at the intersection of power, data centers and advanced computing
Role Overview
We are looking for a Principal Data Center Design Engineer to develop the technical design of a modular data center platform, from initial architecture through detailed engineering, supplier integration and implementation.
This is a senior, highly hands-on individual contributor role for an engineer who enjoys solving complex technical problems, developing engineering solutions personally and taking designs from concept to reality.
You will work across electrical power systems, mechanical cooling and infrastructure integration, ensuring that the overall design is technically robust, cost-effective, maintainable and suitable for repeatable deployment.
Rather than primarily managing teams or external consultants, you will be directly involved in engineering calculations, technical drawings, equipment specifications, design validation and the resolution of practical implementation challenges.
You will collaborate closely with a small, multidisciplinary team spanning engineering, software, energy infrastructure and supply chain.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering Design and Architecture
Develop detailed engineering designs for modular data center infrastructure, translating high-level requirements into practical technical solutions.
Produce and review engineering drawings, schematics, equipment layouts, technical specifications and calculations.
Design and integrate critical infrastructure systems, including power distribution, cooling, monitoring and supporting mechanical systems.
Identify and resolve technical challenges across electrical, mechanical and structural interfaces.
Modular Product Development
Develop repeatable reference designs that can be adapted to different sites and deployment requirements.
Standardise components, interfaces, equipment configurations and engineering documentation.
Apply design-for-manufacturing, design-for-assembly and maintainability principles to modular and prefabricated systems.
Evaluate technical trade-offs involving performance, reliability, energy efficiency, cost and deployment speed.
Power and Cooling IntegrationAssess power distribution architectures, redundancy, protection and interfaces with energy supply systems.
Develop or integrate cooling solutions suitable for high-density computing environments, including liquid cooling where appropriate.
Coordinate power requirements, thermal loads, equipment layouts, cabling, piping, access and maintenance requirements.
Ensure that electrical and mechanical systems operate as a coherent, integrated infrastructure solution.
Suppliers and Implementation
Work directly with equipment manufacturers, engineering partners and specialist contractors.
Evaluate technical proposals, equipment options and supplier designs.
Prepare technical specifications, equipment schedules, bills of materials and engineering inputs for procurement.
Support manufacturing reviews, factory acceptance testing, installation, commissioning and technical troubleshooting.
Technical Documentation and Compliance
Maintain accurate, version-controlled engineering documentation and design standards.
Support technical feasibility assessments, permitting documentation and compliance with relevant European and local regulations.
Work with qualified local professionals where required for statutory approvals.
Contribute to the development of proprietary engineering standards and reusable technical solutions.
Requirements
Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Energy Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
Typically 8–15+ years of relevant engineering experience in data centers, mission-critical infrastructure, industrial systems or a closely related field.
Demonstrable hands-on experience producing engineering designs and technical deliverables.
Experience with data center power and cooling systems and their integration.
Practical experience with modular, prefabricated or containerised infrastructure, or with standardising complex engineering systems for repeatable deployment.
Deep technical expertise in at least one core discipline—electrical power systems or mechanical/thermal engineering—combined with strong cross-disciplinary understanding.
Ability to interpret and produce technical drawings, calculations, specifications and equipment documentation.
Experience working directly with suppliers and resolving technical issues during design, manufacturing, installation or commissioning.
Understanding of infrastructure reliability, redundancy, safety and maintainability.
Strong ownership, problem-solving skills and the ability to operate independently in a fast-moving environment.
Professional fluency in English.
Willingness to travel across Europe when required.
Nice to Have
Experience with AI/HPC infrastructure and high-density GPU deployments.
Hands-on knowledge of liquid cooling, coolant distribution units or advanced heat rejection systems.
Experience with LV/MV power distribution, UPS, switchgear, protection systems or power monitoring.
Familiarity with renewable energy integration, battery storage or grid connection constraints.
Experience with AutoCAD, Revit, BIM, ETAP, DIgSILENT PowerFactory or equivalent engineering tools.
Exposure to factory acceptance testing, commissioning or integrated systems testing.
Familiarity with Polish or Italian construction and permitting processes.
Professional engineering registration recognised in a relevant European jurisdiction.
Experience in a startup, product engineering or industrialisation environment.
Nice to Have
Experience with AI/HPC infrastructure at GPU rack densities above 20 kW — liquid cooling architecture
Familiarity with the Polish or Italian permitting and regulatory environment
Track record of creating replicable design standards adopted across multiple projects or geographies
CDCDP (Certified Data Center Design Professional) or Uptime Institute certification
Italian language
