Principal Embedded Software Engineer (m/f/d)
Summary
Principal-level hands-on embedded software engineer who owns the architecture of laser communication terminal controllers at Mynaric in Munich. Day to day: real-time C/C++ development on target hardware, designing pointing/acquisition/tracking (PAT) modes, writing ICDs with modem hardware/FPGA partners, and leading, mentoring and setting standards for the embedded software team.
- Own the embedded software architecture of laser communication terminal controllers and lead its evolution toward multi-waveform operation.
- Define and maintain interface control documents (ICDs) between terminal software and external modem hardware, and drive alignment with technology partners.
- Design and implement new Pointing, Acquisition and Tracking (PAT) modes and operational state machines together with control systems engineers.
- Set the technical direction, coding standards, review process and verification strategy for embedded software.
- Lead hands-on bring-up and integration on target hardware with electronics, FPGA and control teams.
- Represent embedded software in design reviews and in technical meetings with customers and partners.
- Mentor engineers and build a strong embedded software capability in the team.
- University degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Control Engineering or a related field.
- Minimum 10 years of hands-on professional experience in real-time embedded C/C++, including at least 3 years with architecture responsibility for complex multiprocessor systems.
- Actively writes code and works on target hardware; not only a reviewing or management role.
- In-depth knowledge of real-time systems (RTOS, interrupts, DMA, caches, timers) and communication protocols (UART, SPI, CAN, Ethernet).
- Practical experience writing and negotiating ICDs and integrating software with third-party hardware and FPGAs.
- Experience with control loops, pointing/tracking or sensor-actuator systems; laser communication or PAT experience is a strong plus.
- Familiarity with software standards for space or safety-critical systems (e.g., ECSS-E-ST-40C, DO-178C) is a plus.
- Hands-on lab skills with logic analyzers, oscilloscopes and protocol analyzers.
- Ability to lead, mentor and communicate complex topics clearly in multidisciplinary teams.
