Principal Engineer - Substation, Transmission, Telecom and Cyber Security
We are seeking an experienced SCMS Design Engineer to lead the design and engineering of SCADA / Telecom /Substation Control & Monitoring Systems (SCMS)/ EMS for EHV/HV/MV substations and transmission networks.
The role involves delivering integrated substation automation solutions, ensuring seamless interfacing between control systems, protection systems, communication networks, and primary equipment within a unified SCMS platform.
- Develop and design SCMS / Substation Automation System (SAS) / EMS architecture (station, bay, and process levels).
- Prepare/Review engineering deliverables including:
- System architecture diagrams
- I/O lists and signal interfacing
- Network and communication layouts
- HMI and database configurations
- Interface SCMS with substation equipment such as:
- Protection relays and tele-protection systems
- GIS/AIS switchgear, transformers, feeders
- LCC panels and auxiliary systems
- Design and review control logic, interlocking schemes, and automation sequences.
- Ensure SCMS integration with control centers using protocols like:
- IEC 61850
- IEC 60870-5-101/104
- Lead integration of telecommunication systems (MPLS, SDH, OFC/OPGW networks, 4G/5G, Wireless) for reliable data exchange.
- Implement cybersecurity solutions aligned with IEC 62443 and utility-specific standards.
- Participate in FAT, SAT, commissioning, and system validation activities.
- Review vendor submissions and ensure compliance with project specifications and client standards.
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams including electrical, protection, civil, planning and MEP teams.
- Act as Owner’s Engineer / Technical Advisor for SCMS and Telecommunication scope.
- Review EPC contractor and vendor submissions for technical compliance.
- Prepare formal review comments, compliance matrices, and technical reports.
- Ensure alignment with client standards.
- Participate in design reviews, technical meetings, and vendor discussions.
- Support tender package preparation including scope of work preparation, technical bid evaluations (TBE) and vendor selection.
- Review FAT/SAT procedures and oversee system compliance during execution
- Identify design risks and recommend mitigation measures
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical / Instrumentation / Control Engineering.
- 08-15+ years of experience in:
- SCMS / SCADA / Substation Automation Systems
- Power transmission substations (EHV / HV / MV)
- Strong understanding of:
- Substation primary and secondary equipment
- Protection systems and tele-protection schemes
- Transmission network operations
- Hands-on experience with:
- IEC 61850 and IEC 60870 protocols
- RTUs, BCUs, and IEDs integration
- Knowledge of telecommunication systems:
- MPLS, SDH, FOC/OPGW, Microwave, 4G/5G
- Strong understanding of cybersecurity in substations and OT systems (IEC 62443 or equivalent).
- Experience on 110 KV / 220 KV / 415 KV substation system.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in Middle East utility projects.
- Experience in multi-vendor integration and large-scale transmission projects
- Exposure to brownfield and greenfield substations
- Experience in design, testing, and commissioning phases
