Principal Finance Manager, Amazon Special Projects
Posted Updated
Amazon's Special Projects team takes the Think Big leadership principle to the max, with no industries or subject areas out of bounds. We evaluate, incubate, and scale bold new ideas with the goal of creating entirely new products and services that address grand challenges in the world. Our portfolio includes programs in various stages of development, and our finance team engages directly with Amazon senior leaders to determine which bets we make and how we scale them.
As Principal Finance Manager, you will lead finance support for internal start-ups operating in high ambiguity. You will set the financial strategy and vision for business units that don't yet have established revenue streams, customer bases, or operating histories. You will design investment frameworks that support key program decisions, and present financial analyses and recommendations directly to senior business and finance leaders. You will invent and implement reporting infrastructure, planning rhythms, financial controls, and operational mechanisms.
This role demands a finance leader who is equal parts strategist and operator. Someone who can size a market that doesn't yet exist in the morning and build the month-end close process for a new business in the afternoon. Someone who thrives when data is scarce, stakes are high, and answers aren't obvious. If you want to shape how Amazon invests in innovation and build finance support from the ground up, this role is for you.
Key job responsibilities
● Partner with cross-functional program leaders to evaluate trade-offs and financial implications for business cases, translate development milestones into financial gates, and proactively identify risks and opportunities that inform strategic decisions
● Own end-to-end P&L accountability across the portfolio, leading financial reviews for businesses where cost structures and revenue models are still taking shape
● Produce and present financial analyses, investment recommendations, and portfolio updates to senior business and finance leaders
● Manage and develop a small team, and lead engagement and alignment across various support teams including Central Financial Planning and Analysis, Financial Operations, and Accounting
● Build and maintain business review mechanisms that surface actionable insights and lead to operational improvement
● Automate, simplify, and scale finance processes, building mechanisms and tools that create leverage as the team and portfolio grow
