The opportunity

You'll be joining a growing multidisciplinary engineering consultancy with an excellent reputation for delivering complex infrastructure projects across the UK. As a Principal Engineer, you'll play a leading role within an expanding Rail team while also collaborating with specialists across maritime, asset management and wider infrastructure disciplines.

This is a fantastic opportunity to take ownership of technically challenging schemes, influence the direction of projects and help develop the next generation of engineers.

Projects include:

  • Station developments

  • Bridge design and renewal schemes

  • Access for All (AfA) projects

  • Rail infrastructure upgrades

  • Civil and structural engineering schemes across the rail network

  • Multidisciplinary infrastructure projects

What you'll be doing

You'll combine technical excellence with strong leadership, becoming a trusted advisor to both clients and your team.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Acting as Technical Lead across a range of rail infrastructure projects

  • Leading multidisciplinary design teams from concept through to delivery

  • Managing project budgets, programmes and resources

  • Building and developing strong client relationships

  • Leading project meetings and providing technical guidance throughout delivery

  • Reviewing and approving engineering designs, calculations, reports and drawings

  • Mentoring, managing and developing engineers and graduates

  • Leading design reviews and ensuring coordination across engineering disciplines

  • Preparing fee proposals, scopes of work and supporting tender submissions

  • Carrying out inspections, site visits and technical assessments

  • Supporting business development and identifying new opportunities

  • Ensuring projects comply with industry standards, legislation and engineering best practice



RequirementsAbout you

You're an experienced rail engineer who enjoys leading teams, solving complex engineering challenges and building lasting client relationships. You're commercially aware, technically strong and ready to play a key role in the continued growth of an ambitious engineering consultancy.

You'll ideally have:

  • Essential
    • Chartered or Incorporated Engineer (ICE or IStructE)

    • Around 8+ years' experience within Civil or Structural Engineering

    • Extensive experience delivering rail infrastructure projects

    • CRE(D) accreditation

    • Experience leading engineering projects and multidisciplinary teams

    • Strong knowledge of Network Rail standards, Railway Group Standards, Eurocodes and British Standards

    • Experience with Network Rail engineering assurance processes

    • Proven ability to deliver projects on time and within budget

    • Experience reviewing and approving engineering calculations and designs

    • Strong client-facing communication skills

    • Line management and mentoring experience

    • Good understanding of CDM Regulations

    Desirable
    • Commercial awareness including budgeting, contract management and financial performance

    • Experience preparing fee proposals and supporting successful tenders

    • Knowledge of structural analysis software such as Tekla Tedds, Tekla Structural Designer, MIDAS, Robot, LUSAS, SuperStress or similar
