Principal Installation Technician

The Installation Technician series of job classifications describes technical work involving electrical installation of various research equipment, apparatus and components, and fabricating and assembling related equipment used in large-scale experiments. There are three levels in the series: Installation Technician, Principal Installation Technician, and Principal Installation Technician Lead. The three levels are distinguished by the degree of familiarity with laboratory practices, task complexity, and the extent of supervision required.

Under the direction of a lead, supervisor or scientific and engineering staff, employees in this classification independently develop installation instructions and procedures. These higher-level assignments normally require study and analysis of procedures, layouts, precedents and several possible courses of action.

Assignments may include quality control and provision of direction or technical assistance to other workers.

The Principal Installation Technicians works from system requirements and general instructions as to scope, objectives, time limitations, and priorities.

The supervisor is available for consultation and advice where significant deviations from standard principles and practices must be made.

Work is reviewed for results and conformance to specifications.

Core Duties:

• Plan layout for field installation of cable plant with cable tray loading in accordance with National Electrical Code (NEC).
• Plan and layout distribution frames for cross-connecting assignments.
• Plan and develop procedures for fabricating rack assemblies, installing electronic sub-assemblies and other related equipment.
• Participate in resolving other related layout and assembly issues.
• Instruct and advise others on the preparation of installation request.
• Recommend changes in installation procedures and specifications to simplify assembly and maintenance and increase reliability and safety.
• Train lower-level technicians.
• May assume lead responsibilities for a given project.
• Perform work in accordance with the National Electric Code (NEC). Adhere to applicable environmental safety and health procedures and guidelines such as such as National Electric Code (NEC) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
• May perform any of the duties described in the Installation Technician specification or other duties as assigned.
• Adhere to safety rules.
  

Minimum Education:

High School Diploma or equivalent

Minimum Experience:

Five years’ experience in electrical control systems or a combination of relevant education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

In addition to the qualifications required for Installation Technician, Principal Installation Technicians must have the following qualifications:

• Ability to understand and work from assembly and electrical diagrams.
• A thorough working knowledge of various tools required for installation and assembly work.
• Ability to work with a minimal degree of supervision.
• Must be able to interface with all levels of scientific and/or engineering staff and have good customer service skills.
• Demonstrated strong communication skills (both verbal and written)
• Computer literacy- computer skills and demonstrated experience with office software and email applications
• Knowledge of applicable National Electric Code (NEC), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and SLAC environmental safety and health rules, procedures and applications.
  

Certificates and Licenses Required

Must possess and maintain a Valid California Non-commercial Class C Driver's license.
