Wood is currently recruiting Principal/Senior Piping Designers to support our Engineering Hub in Aberdeen for a 12 month contract basis, working outside IR35.

Provision of Principal Piping Design services to support the delivery of various scopes within the multi client Aberdeen Hub.

The Principal Designer will be an expert CAD user who can create complex drawings using advanced techniques using 2D and 3D software and acts as a point of escalation for complex issues.

The role requires problem solving within multiple substantially different procedures, standards across multiple scopes and clients requiring application of judgement and selection of solutions.

The role will require experience and judgement to plan and accomplish assigned goals with general supervision from engineering.

Detailed services to be provided:

  • Assess risks and scope of studies required by reviewing technical documents specifications, P&IDs, calculation notes, drawings, etc
  • Assist with the constructability review, measurements, installation check and level surveys
  • Assist the subfunction team to plan and develop detailed design documents and drawings from specifications
  • Carry out work activities in accordance with estimated design man hours so as to achieve project / company expectations
  • Review appropriate design documents generated
  • Ensure engineering and design quality, technical accuracy of drawings, material quantities, with correct interpretation and implementation of all piping CAD and system
  • Execute assigned work in accordance with applicable contract procedures and client and projects standards
  • Creates drawings involving plans, layouts, calculations and bills of material
  • Works on assignments involving a variety of design procedures and techniques
  • Performs layouts, design and checking work from the basic data supplied
  • Designs and makes detail drawings from rough sketches involving intricate calculations and the application of fundamental engineering principles
  • Identifies cost effective solutions to design problems
  • Designs and constructs models, prototypes, processes or equipment; compiles and evaluates data, makes recommendations, prepares reports
  • Generates bill of materials from finished designs
  • Ensures quality in design, technical accuracy in the preparation of drawings, material quantities, etc including reviewing others work at more senior levels
  • Plans assigned work effectively and obtains/provides information liaising with the project team and line manager, in time to control man-hours and achieve targets
  • Carries out site visits / surveys and provides inputs to site visit reports
  • A full understanding of the materials and methods normally used in their discipline
  • An understanding of related engineering principles and practices, plus training and diversified experience in the field of activity is required
  • Capable of interpreting key documents including; engineering standards, piping material specifications, P&IDs and Line Lists
  • Technically oriented, mechanically inclined, good at mathematics and talented at translating intangible concepts into hands-on project plans
  • Competent user of CAD/D software
  • Offshore trips will be required
