Job Summary
The Principal Product Manager is responsible for driving complex product strategy, roadmap execution, and cross-functional alignment across one or more product lines, platforms, or product families. This position owns high-impact initiatives that span multiple teams, systems, and customer segments.
The Principal Product Manager serves as a product subject matter expert, shapes product direction, mentors product team members, and drives execution excellence across the product lifecycle.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty and responsibility satisfactorily. The accountabilities listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or ability required.
- Owns and drives product strategy, roadmap development, and execution for complex product areas or cross-product initiatives.
- Translates enterprise and portfolio-level strategy into clear product requirements, prioritized backlogs, and release plans.
- Leads high-impact, cross-functional initiatives spanning multiple product teams, ensuring alignment, execution, and delivery success.
- Acts as a senior product partner to Technology, Commercial, Customer Success, and Operations for assigned products or initiatives.
- Identifies and manages product tradeoffs related to scope, timelines, resources, technical feasibility, customer impact, and business value.
- Drives alignment across stakeholders, ensuring product priorities, decisions, risks, and dependencies are clearly communicated and understood.
- Coordinates cross-functional dependencies to support efficient execution and delivery across multiple teams, systems, or platforms.
- Discovers and validates market problems through direct client engagement, stakeholder collaboration, industry research, and analysis of customer and user needs.
- Provides input to win/loss analyses, contributing to the evaluation of sales success and product profitability.
- Contributes to the preparation of statements of work, RFI responses, and marketing collateral.
- Provides input regarding customer-facing release notes that describe changes in business terms concerning what has changed and why.
- Supports business stakeholders, implementation, operations, and sales staff on product features and enhancements on an as-needed basis.
- Deeply understands customer needs and user-centric design to define internal and external customer requirements.
- Produces thought leadership content for distribution via events, blogs, e-books, and other outlets.
- Develops, maintains, and communicates product vision, positioning, value proposition, buyer/user personas, competitive information, and roadmaps for assigned product areas.
- Leads development of AI-embedded, analytics, automation, or other advanced product capabilities where applicable, ensuring capabilities are prioritized and aligned to measurable client and business value.
- Optimizes product trade-off decisions during the development process and balances near-term delivery requirements with longer-term product strategy.
- Supports product launches, major enhancements, client transitions, and adoption activities to ensure successful market and client outcomes.
- Participates in client meetings, product demonstrations, QBRs, trade shows, and web conferences as a product subject matter expert.
- Contributes to the preparation of statements of work, RFI/RFP responses, product positioning, and go-to-market materials.
- Mentors Product Management team members by sharing product management best practices, providing guidance on complex product decisions, and supporting consistency across the product discipline.
- Drives continuous improvement in product processes, delivery practices, stakeholder engagement, and cross-functional collaboration.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor. These may, on occasion, be unrelated to the position described here.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, skills, and experience to perform the job.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSE/REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Product Management certifications or certificate is a plus
QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in product management, business analysis, or software engineering.
- Minimum of 3 to 5 years of experience in clinical research, healthcare technology, AI/ML/NLP, data analytics, or related domain.
- Functional understanding of the broader clinical research process, clinical operations, and/or multiple clinical software systems (e.g., clinical site support, patient engagement, safety, regulatory review, etc.).
- Commercial software delivery experience in a 21 CFR Part 11 validated environment is a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to lead complex product initiatives from discovery and requirements through delivery, launch, adoption, and ongoing optimization.
- Proven ability to operate at both strategic and execution levels, translating product vision and business objectives into actionable roadmaps and measurable outcomes.
- Demonstrated experience incorporating AI, machine learning, automation, or advanced analytics capabilities into product strategy and roadmap decisions is preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to make rapid and complex decisions that optimize across multiple, and at times, competing objectives.
- Advanced stakeholder management, cross-functional collaboration, and influence skills, including the ability to lead without direct authority in a complex, matrixed environment.
- Strong business acumen with the ability to connect product decisions to revenue growth, market expansion, adoption, retention, efficiency, or product profitability.
- Results orientation, team player, and holding self and others accountable for achieving results for customers and the business.
- Strong written and oral communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate technical matters to technical and non-technical individuals and to all levels of management.
- Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills.
- Experience with Agile software development methodology preferred.
- Demonstrated experience incorporating AI, machine learning, or advanced analytics capabilities into product strategy and roadmap decisions, with the ability to evaluate feasibility, articulate client impact, and align AI investments to business objectives.
