Summary

Key responsibilities:
- Defining carbohydrate science strategy and technology roadmap.
- Establishing and developing a new platform capability that does not currently exist within the organisation.
- Identifying and enabling future innovation opportunities across multiple business sectors.
- Building internal knowledge and technical capability in this specialist area.
- Acting as Croda's recognised subject matter expert in carbohydrate synthesis.
- Developing external partnerships and leveraging scientific networks to accelerate innovation.
- Facilitating coordination and knowledge sharing of synthesis activities across Asia and with our global teams.
Key Requirements:
- PhD in Organic Chemistry, Carbohydrate Chemistry, Synthetic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry or a closely related scientific discipline.
- Extensive postdoctoral and/or industrial research experience in carbohydrate synthesis, glycochemistry or complex organic synthesis.
- Strong technical expertise in the design, synthesis, purification and structural characterisation of carbohydrates, oligosaccharides, glycoconjugates or related molecules.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and execute scientific strategies, technology roadmaps and long-term research programmes.
- Proven experience in establishing a new scientific platform, laboratory capability or specialist technical function from the ground up.
- Strong track record of translating fundamental scientific research into commercially relevant technologies, products or innovation opportunities.
- Experience identifying and evaluating new applications across sectors such as Personal Care, Consumer Care, Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Pharmaceuticals or Specialty Chemicals would be advantageous.
- Recognised technical credibility in carbohydrate science, supported by relevant publications, patents, conference presentations, industry projects or scientific collaborations.
- Strong understanding of synthetic route design, reaction optimisation, scale-up considerations, analytical techniques and laboratory safety requirements.
- Experience building organisational knowledge through technical training, mentoring, scientific documentation and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
- Proven ability to lead complex research programmes and influence cross-functional stakeholders without direct reporting authority.
- Strong external scientific network, with experience establishing collaborations with universities, research institutes, technology partners or industry specialists.
- Excellent stakeholder-management and communication skills, with the ability to present complex scientific concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Experience working effectively across regional and global teams in a matrix organisation.
- Strong strategic thinking, scientific curiosity and commercial awareness, with the ability to connect emerging technologies to future business opportunities.
