Principal Software Development Engineer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Principal Software Development Engineer based in India.

This is an expert-level engineering role focused on shaping the architecture, technical direction, and quality of a flagship online product. You will work within a small, high-trust engineering team and influence significant architectural decisions across a complex software platform. The role combines hands-on development with technical leadership, strategic research, mentoring, and engineering practice improvements. You will help drive a major modernization initiative, including the development of new AI-powered product capabilities. Working closely with Product, Architecture, QA, Marketing, and other stakeholders, you will translate business and technical requirements into scalable solutions. This is an opportunity to own major technical areas while helping raise engineering, testing, and development standards across the product.

• Design and develop software units and modules that meet functional, non-functional, quality, and delivery requirements.
• Lead strategic research, technical design, and architecture decisions for major areas of the product.
• Serve as a subject matter expert and take ownership of significant product components.
• Design, code, test, debug, troubleshoot, and enhance complex software solutions.
• Evaluate application performance and identify opportunities for scalability, reliability, and efficiency improvements.
• Participate in architecture, design, and code reviews while promoting strong engineering practices.
• Drive improvements to Product Development processes, standards, procedures, and technical best practices.
• Provide accurate estimates, manage priorities effectively, and communicate project progress, risks, and issues.
• Develop and maintain technical documentation and contribute technical content to product documentation.
• Partner with QA and technical support teams to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve system issues.
• Lead test automation, test planning, triage, troubleshooting, and continuous quality improvement initiatives.
• Develop and execute automated and customer-focused test cases and help establish testing strategies across product areas.
• Mentor and support less experienced Software Engineers, contributing to their technical and professional development.
• Collaborate closely with Product Management, Architecture, QA, Marketing, and other cross-functional stakeholders.
• Participate in backlog grooming and contribute to planning and delivery activities.

Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field; a Master's degree is preferred.
• 6+ years of professional software development experience, including experience working with complex software products.
• Previous experience in a technical lead role with the ability to provide technical direction and mentor other engineers.
• Expert-level software design, coding, debugging, and problem-solving skills.
• Strong analytical and requirements analysis capabilities, with the ability to translate complex needs into effective technical solutions.
• Deep expertise in Java 8 and server-side application development.
• Strong experience with J2EE, including web applications, Servlets, and Filters.
• Experience with JavaScript and TypeScript and modern web front-end frameworks.
• Strong MySQL knowledge, including schema design, query optimization, and performance tuning.
• Experience configuring, deploying, and tuning Apache Tomcat.
• Strong understanding of web application architecture, REST APIs, and multi-tenant SaaS patterns.
• Experience identifying defects, performing root-cause analysis, and resolving complex technical issues.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across technical and non-technical teams.
• Demonstrated technical leadership, mentoring, teamwork, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
• Strong ability to prioritize workload, manage time, provide accurate estimates, and deliver against commitments.
• Self-motivated, proactive, and comfortable taking ownership of complex technical problems.
• Experience migrating monolithic architectures toward modern frameworks, particularly Vue 3 and Tailwind CSS, is strongly preferred.
• Familiarity with cloud platforms, especially AWS, and CI/CD pipelines is valuable.
• Exposure to AI/LLM-powered product features is a plus.
• Experience in eLearning or content authoring technologies is an advantage.
