Principal Software Engineer - Data Lakes

As a Principal Software Engineer, you will shape the technical architecture and drive the development of Fivetran’s Managed Data Lake. You’ll collaborate with product and engineering teams to deliver scalable, high-performance data lake systems and contribute to open-source projects. You’ll set technical standards and mentor cross-functional teams while solving reliability, availability, and performance challenges. This remote role in Germany offers impact at scale in a data-driven platform company.

• Partner with product teams to translate requirements into new capabilities
• Design, develop, and operate large-scale data lake systems with a dedicated team
• Contribute to open-source projects such as DuckDB and Polaris
• Align on open-source standards and internal toolsets
• Analyze fault-tolerance, performance, and scale issues to ensure reliability
• Define technical direction and influence cross-functional teams

• 6+ years of hands-on or research experience with high-performance relational data management systems
• Strong Java and C++ development skills
• Experience with public clouds (AWS, Azure, GCP)
• Knowledge of columnar storage formats
• Proven track record in delivering large, complex projects
