Principal Software Engineer (Full Stack)

Summary

Principal Software Engineer leads the development of TP ICAP’s Fusion platform using modern full-stack tech (React, TypeScript, AWS) and sets engineering standards for a global market infrastructure.

Role Overview

TP ICAP has partnered with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to build the next generation of the Fusion Platform and make it a global market infrastructure. This role will work in a new team to build out a platform based on the latest technology and architecture. The Principal Software Engineer will provide technical leadership on TP ICAP’s flagship Fusion platform, setting standards and direction for engineers with Engineering Excellence in mind. They will be comfortable working in agile teams, fostering transparent communication, maintaining a commitment to quality, and focusing on getting things done.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the primary technical leader and developer on the Fusion team, demonstrating strong technical competencies and being a dependable, high‑value contributor.
  • Be an expert in modern Full‑Stack Engineering using React, TypeScript, JavaScript and object‑oriented design principles.
  • Provide technical oversight of the analysis and design for assigned projects.
  • Design, develop, test and oversee production software solutions, including highly complex systems and modifications to existing systems.
  • Communicate the architecture and principles behind a system to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Support the use of preferred planning and prioritisation tooling (JIRA) to capture and track deliveries, identify issues and aid roadmap and iteration planning.
  • Ensure the team follows a well‑defined SDLC that supports planning, prioritisation and delivery.
  • Help the team define scope and guide estimation of work, leveraging prior experience.
  • Be custodians for target‑state architecture and best practice within the development team and across the Fusion estate.
  • Identify opportunities to evolve systems toward target‑state architecture and direct refactoring and prioritisation.
  • Work alongside Team Leaders to provide technical leadership and direction for the development team.
  • Participate in retrospectives and seek opportunities to drive best practice.
  • Lead the software team to deliver high‑quality, innovative solutions.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to coach, motivate and develop team members through code reviews and mentoring.
  • Guide and support the team in identifying and escalating risks, and take timely actions to mitigate them.
  • Work with Team Leaders to provide time and resource estimates, identify potential risks and propose mitigation actions.
  • Share complex technical designs or issues with non‑technical stakeholders and influence decision‑making.
  • Identify tools and methodologies to improve the development process’s effectiveness.
  • Assist and facilitate prioritisation of software defects and enhancements.
  • Manage risks and issues effectively, ensuring timely escalation to project stakeholders.
  • The Fusion Platform Team builds, owns and runs its services from development to production, with services used 24/5 by several teams.

Experience & Competencies

Essential

  • Demonstrable industry experience as a Full‑Stack or Front/Backend Engineer in TypeScript.
  • Front‑end skills: Proficient in HTML5, CSS3, TypeScript, React, Redux, ReactQuery; experience with modern JavaScript frameworks; version control (Git); familiarity with RESTful APIs, GraphQL, WebSockets; experience with CSS pre‑processors (e.g. Tailwind).
  • Back‑end skills: Proficiency in backend languages (TypeScript and/or other OOP languages such as C# or Java); strong database knowledge (SQL and NoSQL); proficiency with RESTful APIs, GraphQL APIs and WebSockets; experience with microservices architecture; version control (Git); Terraform; automated testing; AWS services (Lambda, Fargate, API Gateway, AppSync); Agile cross‑functional delivery; low‑latency event‑driven production environments; Pub/Sub patterns with messaging technologies (e.g. SOLACE/AMQP); containerisation; code quality with unit, integration and e2e testing; AWS CLI; Linux shell or Windows PowerShell; CI/CD flows; continuous delivery; Agile tooling (JIRA).
  • Openness to innovative ideas, ability to create new approaches, and a drive to improve processes; strong analytical and problem‑solving skills; adherence to SOLID principles; ethical work conduct; high attention to detail; proficient in source control (Git).
