Job Title: Print Shop Manager (Temporary-Leave Cover)

Department: Department of Innovation and Technology

Hourly Rate: $25-$28/hr based on experience

Position Summary:

We are seeking a reliable and organized Print Shop Manager to oversee the daily printing operations for our K-12 school district. The volume of this print shop is significant. This person will manage print requests from district staff, teachers, and community groups like the PTA.

The ideal candidate should be comfortable operating large, commercial-grade copiers, handling various types of paper, using automated finishing tools, and managing specialty print jobs to create professional-looking school materials.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Prior experience preferred
  • High level of organizational skills to efficiently manage large volumes of print requests
  • High level of interpersonal skills to effectively communicate in a professional manner with end-users
  • Willingness to learn how to increase workflow efficiency
  • Ability to troubleshoot unique printshop requests

Essential Job Functions:

  • Operating High-Volume Printers & Specialty Formats:
  • Manage mass black-and-white print jobs using heavy-duty, high-speed copiers
  • Operate commercial-quality color printers for vibrant flyers, presentations, and special projects.
  • Set up and run specialized envelope attachments on the copiers to efficiently print large batches of mailing envelopes.
  • Manage specialty print requests that require unique layouts or materials, including large-format posters, sheets of adhesive labels, and custom postcards.
  • Print Finishing and Assembly:
  • Use specialized machine attachments that automatically fold and staple booklets, trim uneven edges, and punch holes for binders.
  • Operate standalone paper folding machines, specifically setting them up to accurately fold items like informational pamphlets and official district checks.
  • Safely operate our in-house laser cutter to slice large stacks of printed materials down to custom sizes.
  • Paper & Inventory Management:
  • Understand how to properly load and process different thicknesses of paper through the machines to prevent jams, ranging from standard lightweight paper to thicker card stock.
  • Fulfill specific school requests using a variety of paper types.
  • Monitor the shop's paper supply, order new cases from vendors when running low, and ensure orders are billed to the correct school department accounting codes.
  • Maintenance & Vendor Communication:
  • Act as the main point of contact for outside repair and technology vendors, requesting service or reviewing quotes when machines need maintenance or replacing.

Technical Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience operating and troubleshooting commercial-grade printing equipment (both color and black-and-white).
  • Practical knowledge of how different paper weights (like heavy card stock versus standard copy paper) and specialty formats (labels, posters, postcards, envelopes) behave in large production printers.
  • Experience using automated print-finishing features, such as booklet makers, trimmers, and hole punchers, as well as standalone paper folding machines.
  • Ability and authorization to safely operate manual finishing equipment, including a laser cutter.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage multiple print requests from different schools, track inventory, and communicate effectively with staff and outside vendors.

    Physical Ability:
  • Ability to frequently lift, carry, push, and pull heavy cases of paper, bulk stock, and finished print materials weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Continuous standing, walking, bending, stooping, reaching, and kneeling throughout the shift to keep multiple machines running and manage inventory.
  • Strong fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination to clear equipment jams, load specialty media trays, adjust machine settings, and operate manual finishing tools.

    Work Environment:

  • Daily exposure to an active, production-focused print shop using high-speed commercial copiers, automated paper folders, binding tools, and paper cutters, requiring strict adherence to equipment safety standards.
  • Moderate to high noise levels from active machinery, heat generated by continuous printing runs, and exposure to paper dust and toner.
