PRN ENDOSCOPY SUPPORT TECHNICIAN

Job Description

Our Surgery Department is seeking a PRN Endoscopy Support Technician. This position is scheduled every Wednesday and two Thursdays per month, with hours that may fluctuate based on patient volume and department needs. Flexibility is required, including the ability to float to other areas when necessary.

Primary function of this position is to support endoscopy services by assisting with endoscope reprocessing and providing in-room assistance during gastroenterology procedures. Additionally, may be cross-trained in other areas of the department as needed.

PRIMARY FUNCTION & RELATIONSHIP TO TOTAL ORGANIZATION:

Provides quality care on a direct and indirect basis. Communicates with and on behalf of the patients and coordinates patient care with other health care team members. Organizes those aspects of patient care for which she/he is accountable. Primary function of this position is to support endoscopy services by assisting with endoscope reprocessing and providing in-room assistance during gastroenterology procedures; may cross train in other areas of the department.

Director of Surgery

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Assists with the setup, preparation, and turnover of endoscopy procedure rooms before and after procedures.
2. Provides in-room technical assistance during endoscopy procedures under the direction of the RN and/or provider, within demonstrated competency.
3. Assists the endoscopy team with equipment, supplies, positioning, and other non-licensed procedural support as directed.
4. Performs endoscope pre-cleaning and transport following procedures in accordance with department policy and manufacturer's IFUs.
5. Performs endoscope reprocessing, including leak testing, manual cleaning, rinsing, high-level disinfection, drying, handling, and storage according to established policies, IFUs, and infection prevention standards.
6. Accurately completes required endoscope reprocessing documentation and maintains appropriate traceability records.
7. Cleans, disinfects, and prepares endoscopy equipment, accessories, and procedure areas between patients.
8. Recognizes problems or abnormalities involving endoscopes, reprocessing equipment, or associated supplies and promptly reports concerns to the appropriate staff member.
9. Assists with maintaining endoscopy supplies and established PAR levels and communicates supply or equipment needs appropriately.
10. Inspects supplies and equipment for cleanliness, integrity, expiration dates, and readiness for use.
11. Assists Central Sterile with cleaning, inspection, preparation, packaging, sterilization, and appropriate storage of instruments after completion of required training and competencies.
12. Assists with environmental cleaning, room turnover, stocking, and preparation of Same-Day Surgery, Surgery, Pain, and other department areas as assigned.
13. Provides support to Specialty Clinics as assigned, including room preparation, stocking, cleaning, patient flow, and other duties appropriate to the position.
14. Assists with patient transport, transfer, positioning, and other supportive activities as directed by licensed clinical staff and within demonstrated competency.
15. Follows standard precautions, infection prevention practices, and appropriate PPE requirements at all times.
16. Demonstrates proper handling and disposal of biohazardous materials, sharps, chemicals, and other potentially hazardous materials.
17. Ensures equipment is maintained according to department procedures and manufacturer's recommendations and promptly reports equipment malfunctions or safety concerns.
18. Demonstrates knowledge that patient and workplace safety are priorities by identifying and reporting potential or actual safety, infection prevention, or equipment concerns.
19. Completes required orientation, annual education, competencies, and department-specific training, including competencies related to endoscope reprocessing.
20. Demonstrates flexibility in supporting department staffing and scheduling needs, including floating to cross-trained areas when needed.
21. Communicates effectively and professionally with patients, providers, coworkers, and other departments.
22. Maintains patient confidentiality and complies with hospital policies, regulatory requirements, and applicable standards.
23. Demonstrates teamwork by supporting department needs, accepting feedback, assisting coworkers, and contributing to a positive and efficient work environment.
24. Performs other duties as assigned that are consistent with the employee's training, demonstrated competency, and position responsibilities.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Requires constant mental alertness and the ability to evaluate, detect, and act on changes to the patient’s condition. Maintains a high degree of efficiency in the ability to change from task to task and establishing appropriate priorities.

Requires full range of body motion, including patient assist, manual and finger dexterity, and eye hand coordination. Occasionally requires long periods of standing, walking, and lifting heavy items.

Must be able to work in a high stress environment, and able to work closely and effectively with occasional demanding providers/surgeons.

Works in environmentally controlled atmosphere. Exposure to harmful chemicals and radiation. Chance of injury caused by needles and sharp instruments, autoclave burns, electrical equipment, power tools, and body fluids are all risks of working in this department.

MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS PREFERRED:

• Previous healthcare experience or CNA.
• Completion of BLS certification within 6 months of hire.
