Process Engineer, Operational Excellence, Strategic Planning & Engagement

Discussion
Are you someone who questions whether constraints should exist at all — rather than optimizing within them? Do you thrive on transforming broken, missing, or invisible processes into measurable, scalable systems?

The Process Engineering team — part of Strategic Planning & Engagement (SPE) within Sales, Marketing & Global Services — is Amazon's operational excellence capability that combines Lean Six Sigma rigor with the ability to build scalable mechanisms that put diagnostic power in the hands of business leaders.

We are looking for a Process Engineer who digs into root causes and redesigns processes from scratch — working backwards from the business problem and the customer. You will lead strategic initiatives spanning multiple teams within a VP-level organization, where the process is broken, missing, or invisible. Your job is to make it measurable, simple, and scalable.

You will apply Lean Six Sigma methodology — not as a rigid framework, but as a thinking system adapted to each problem. Some engagements require full Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control rigor across months; others demand rapid diagnostic cycles in days. What remains constant: you start with the problem, not the process. You simplify before you automate. You deliver outcomes, not reports.

A differentiating capability of this role is defining and standardizing processes with enough fidelity to be operationalized by AI agents — specifying decision logic, branching conditions, exception-handling paths, and measurable acceptance criteria that determine when a process outcome is valid without human review.

Key job responsibilities
Lead the full lifecycle of complex, cross-functional process improvement initiatives spanning multiple teams — from diagnosis through implementation — using Lean Six Sigma and data-driven methodologies to deliver measurable impact

Conduct direct observation of processes where work happens, identify operational bottlenecks through quantitative analysis and process mining, and translate findings into structured process designs

Define and standardize business processes with sufficient detail to be operationalized through AI agents and automation — specifying decision logic, exception-handling paths, role-accountable handoffs, and measurable acceptance criteria

Partner with business, product, and engineering teams to translate ambiguous requirements into scalable solutions; define measurement frameworks that quantify business impact; and author initial standard operating procedures during process design

Drive adoption of standardized methodologies across organizations, influence senior stakeholders without direct authority, and build repeatable frameworks that reduce complexity and sustain independently

A day in the life
You will start your week embedded in the business — observing how work actually flows and identifying where friction lives. Mid-week, you are deep in data: running root cause analysis, mapping value streams, and validating hypotheses with stakeholders across the organization. By end of week, you are translating findings into structured process designs — complete with decision logic, handoff accountabilities, and acceptance criteria detailed enough for AI-agent execution. You will regularly present to senior leaders, collaborate across teams, and coach colleagues on methodology.

About the team
Process Engineering is one of six functions within Strategic Planning & Engagement (SPE), a team whose mission is to be a force multiplier for SMGS Ops organizational effectiveness and excellence. We are Lean Six Sigma practitioners and operational excellence experts who drive efficiency through data-driven insights, strategic planning, and business optimization. We work across the organization on the hardest process problems — the ones that are ambiguous, cross-functional, and invisible until someone makes them measurable. We value curiosity over credentials, outcomes over activity, and sustainable systems over one-time fixes.
