Process Engineer

The Process Engineer role involves improving, maintaining and troubleshooting production processes to support safe, efficient and high-quality manufacturing. The role provides hands-on engineering support to Production, investigates and resolves technical issues, develops and maintains production equipment and processes, and supports continuous improvement and new product introduction. The Process Engineer also supports calibration activities and ensures production equipment and processes are maintained in line with relevant quality and compliance requirements.
General
- Improve, maintain, and repair OXTS production tools and processes, including calibration.
- Work cross-functionally with the NPI Engineer, Engineering, Production, Quality and Purchasing to support the introduction of new products into Production, including process improvement, tooling, test capability and production readiness.
- Demonstrate understanding and practical application of continuous improvement and quality tools, to enhance process efficiency and resolve recurring issues effectively.
- Participate in relevant Operations and Process Engineering meetings as required.
Real-Time Problem Investigation and Resolution
- Support with real-time investigation and resolution of production build and test issues where the process has not been achieved right first time.
- Implement and document agreed improvements following production issues, ensuring changes are communicated and appropriate training is provided to prevent recurrence.
- Keep Production and Quality Manager informed of any quality issues that might affect past and current product deliveries.
- Support with production process improvements, product design improvement or replacement.
- Escalate complex or recurring technical issues to the Senior Process Engineer / Process Engineering Team Leader where required.
Managing Equipment
- Monitor and maintain assigned production equipment, including calibration tables and thermal chambers, supporting corrective actions to reduce downtime.
- Carry out and support preventative maintenance activities in line with agreed schedules, working with external suppliers and escalating issues where required.
- Ensure that test systems and maintenance procedures are followed per work instructions, with up-to-date logbooks and records.
- Support the development, improvement and availability of appropriate jigs, tooling and production equipment.
- Design, purchase, and maintain equipment such as jigs and tools for use in Production.
- Utilise scripting/programming, including Python where appropriate, to develop and maintain simple software tools, automate routine tasks, streamline calibration processes and support production efficiency.
Calibration and Compliance
- Assist with calibration procedures and maintenance, ensuring equipment is calibrated and fit for use before production activities.
- Contribute to calibration quality-control data for assigned equipment.
- Provide technical support for external audits and customer questions.
- Support external calibration activity for production tools and equipment, including providing technical input and maintaining relevant records and certificates where required.
- Ensure equipment under their responsibility is maintained and calibrated in line with applicable procedures and standards.
Health and Safety
- Carry out risk assessments for equipment, processes and technical activities where required, and ensure appropriate controls are followed.
- Maintain a clean and orderly work environment, promoting safe and efficient business conduct.
Training and Development
- Provide technical training and knowledge transfer to Production staff where required, particularly following process, equipment or product changes.
- Identify training or competency gaps relating to production processes and escalate these to the appropriate Team Leader or Manager.
Production Support
- Assist Operations to ensure safe, efficient and high-quality production output, supporting departmental objectives.
- Participate in regular reviews with Production to identify and resolve technical issues, share knowledge and support improvements in build and test processes.
- Create, review and maintain relevant production documentation, including work instructions and process documentation, ensuring agreed process changes are accurately documented.
New Product Introduction Support
- Provide Process Engineering input to the NPI Engineer and wider cross-functional team on manufacturability, production processes, tooling, test capability and calibration requirements.
- Support development, validation and implementation of production processes and equipment required for new products.
- Support build trials, pilot activity and post-launch improvements, feeding issues and lessons learned back into the NPI process.
Other Responsibilities
- Work with the Process Engineering Team Leader and wider Operations team to support introduction of new equipment.
- Work with the Senior Process Engineer on complex technical issues, process improvements and assigned project activity where required.
- Maintain clear communication with relevant stakeholders and ensure technical knowledge is documented and shared.
- Support regional OXTS Operations teams with production and test equipment requirements where required.
- Other duties as reasonably required.
- Strong hands-on engineering background, ideally within mechatronics, manufacturing, production or test engineering. (highly desirable)
- Experience with scripting or programming, particularly Python. (highly desirable)
- Experience troubleshooting production and test issues using structured root cause analysis methods such as 5 Whys, fishbone analysis and fault trees.
- Basic electronics and PCB fault-finding knowledge. (highly desirable)
- Practical low-voltage electrical skills relevant to production and test equipment. (highly desirable)
- Experience using CAD software such as SolidWorks and interpreting technical drawings. (highly desirable)
- Experience with process validation, continuous improvement and production process development.
- Able to create and maintain technical documentation such as SOPs, work instructions and process records.
- Experience with ERP/MRP or manufacturing systems; exposure to SQL, smart factory systems or 3D printing would be advantageous.
