Job Summary:
A Product Designer must be able to create a range of simple to complex 3D CAD models and accurate 2D drawings, apply mechanical design principles to products, tooling, fixtures, and automation, work with the entire Engineering Department, and report directly to the Engineering Manager.
Duties/Responsibilities
Create 3D conceptual designs & 2D drawings for various injection molded products – within a reasonable time frame
Develop ergonomic mechanisms for various mechanical applications
Create prototype-intent 3D models and corresponding tooling files for suppliers
Create 3D CAD tooling fixtures for product processing
Work with Project Engineers to write up changes to a prototype/production tool; update 3D CAD & prints accordingly
Make sure projects have all necessary documentation including but not limited to ISO9001:2005 documents
Work with management to identify areas of improvement; set & reach company rocks/goals
Assist fellow Product Designers in concept/design of their projects
Maintain a clean, organized, & safe working environment
Lead small R&D projects
Design and develop mechanical components, assemblies, mechanisms, fixtures for manufacturing applications
Apply design-for-manufacturing and design-for-assembly principles to improve reliability, manufacturability, safety, and cycle time
Performs other related duties as assigned
Additional experience with SolidWorks, CATIA, FEA analysis, Moldflow software, machine/automation design, robotics or controls integration, and ERP (PLEX) would be beneficial
Required Skills/Abilities:
Knowledge & proficiency in SolidWorks or an equivalent 3D parametric modelling software
Create, acquire, analyze, or interpret information in a logical manner & then translate that into 3D CAD models that can also easily be picked up by another team member
Computer proficiency, attention to detail, good work ethic, able to troubleshoot problems
Understand both English & Metric systems of measurement
On occasion, be able to use measuring tools such as tape measure, calipers, protractors, dividers, & scales (not an exhaustive list)
Ability to read & understand engineering drawings, have advanced math skills
Strong understanding of mechanical design fundamentals including mechanisms, tolerances, fits, materials, fasteners and fabricated/machined components
Mechanical design and/or industrial automation design experience
Ability to develop designs from concept through detailed drawings, fabrication, assembly, debugging, and production implementation
Ability to work effectively as part of a team and maintain performance in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent.
5+ years of experience in product design, mechanical design, and/or automation design required; injection molded product experience strongly preferred.
