Product Engineer

Founding Product Engineer

Department: Engineering

Location: San Francisco

Employment Type: FullTime

About the Role

We're a small, fast-moving team building an AI-powered pricing and monetization platform that helps B2B companies continuously optimize their pricing strategies — from packaging and willingness-to-pay analysis to deal coaching and CPQ. We're looking for a Founding Product Engineer to join us on-site in San Francisco and own significant product surface area from day one.

This is a hands-on, high-ownership role. You'll work directly with customers, leadership, and product to define architecture, ship production-quality systems, and ensure every feature can be driven by LLM agents. If you've thrived as an early employee or technical founder at a B2B startup — writing the code, talking to users, and setting engineering culture all at once — this role was written for you.

What You'll Do

  • Own entire product modules end-to-end: scope with customers, design versioned APIs, build the UI, ship, and iterate — without waiting on a PM.

  • Design and evolve architecture for agentic AI systems across Slack bots, terminal UIs, web interfaces, and vendor integrations.

  • Ensure features are drivable by LLM agents via MCP/FastMCP servers and conversational interfaces.

  • Move pricing and business logic off the client and into robust backend services to preserve financial fidelity.

  • Extend and maintain a typed pricing ontology (Pydantic models for SKU, Proposition, Persona, Pricing, and upcoming: Customer, Contract, Quote).

  • Lead architectural reviews and technical discussions to keep systems secure, extensible, and correct.

  • Establish testing, observability, deployment, and performance monitoring practices for AI-driven features.

  • Mentor peers, influence product strategy, and help shape engineering culture and best practices.

  • Treat money-handling code as load-bearing infrastructure — prioritize root-cause analysis for production issues.

  • Adopt and improve an AI-native SDLC where agents assist with code generation and automated review gates.

What We're Looking For

Required:

  • 8+ years of software engineering experience, with proven ownership of full product areas at startup or staff-level scope.

  • Deep backend expertise — production experience with FastAPI, Python, and MongoDB (or a closely comparable stack).

  • Credible full-stack range: ability to design versioned REST/GraphQL APIs and ship polished React/TypeScript UIs independently.

  • Track record of taking ambiguous customer problems all the way to shipped features without PM support.

  • Experience gathering requirements directly from customers and translating them into product specifications.

  • Familiarity with B2B SaaS monetization concepts: pricing models, packaging, quoting, or CPQ.

  • Experience building or integrating AI-assisted features and agent-driven workflows (LLM interfaces, MCP-like endpoints, etc.).

  • High standards for correctness, especially for financial logic.

  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without visa sponsorship.

Nice to Have:

  • Built MCP servers or tooling for LLM agents.

  • Experience with billing, CPQ, metering, or pricing systems.

  • Experience with data-dense frontend components and/or conversational interfaces.

  • Familiarity with data residency, SOC 2 / GDPR constraints, and compliant development practices.

  • Prior technical founder, co-founder, or early employee who shipped a 0-to-1 B2B product to paying customers.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: $200,000 – $250,000 USD annually, depending on experience.

  • Early-stage equity commensurate with a founding team member.

  • Direct impact on product direction and engineering culture from day one.

Location

This role is on-site in San Francisco, CA. Remote and hybrid arrangements are not available for this position. Visa sponsorship is not offered — candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
