Key Responsibilities
MBOM Structure, Routing & Data Governance
- Translate EBOMs into production-ready MBOMs; audit incoming engineering data and configure structures in SAP (or equivalent ERP)
- Create, review, and maintain accurate BOMs/MBOMs and manufacturing routings, including operation sequences, work centers, and process steps
- Establish accurate item categories (Stock, Non-stock, Text), scrap factors, and phantom assemblies
- Manage alternative and variant BOM configurations to support unique assembly rules across multiple plants/locations
- Ensure BOM/routing data aligns with engineering drawings, specifications, and actual shop-floor processes
- Synchronize MBOM/routing data with adjacent ERP objects, including Material Master Records, Production Routings, and Work Centers
Change Management & Data Quality
- Incorporate engineering changes (ECOs/ECNs) into BOMs and routings in a timely manner, using ERP Engineering Change Management (e.g., SAP ECM/Change Numbers) to track revisions and schedule material effectivity dates
- Execute mass maintenance (e.g., SAP CS20 and mass-data tools) to globally update/swap obsolete parts and component quantities
- Audit BOM/routing data periodically and perform system health checks to identify and correct discrepancies, eliminating unconfigured items that could disrupt MRP or production order releases
- Develop and maintain standard work documentation, ensuring work instructions reflect current, repeatable best practices on the shop floor
Standard Time & Labor Management
- Conduct time studies (stopwatch, MTM/MOST, predetermined time systems, historical data analysis, or similar) to establish accurate standard times for manufacturing operations
- Maintain and update labor standards in the ERP system to reflect process changes, tooling upgrades, or automation improvements
- Analyze variances between standard and actual production times; investigate root causes and recommend corrective actions
- Partner with Operations to validate standards against real-time production performance
Process & Continuous Improvement
- Support capacity planning and production scheduling through accurate routing, BOM, and time data
- Identify opportunities for process improvement, cycle time reduction, and labor efficiency gains
- Participate in new product introduction (NPI) activities, ensuring manufacturability and accurate initial BOM/MBOM/routing setup
- Provide data and documentation to support Lean, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement initiatives
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with R&D and Design Engineering to resolve structural discrepancies between CAD structures and ERP/SAP configurations
- Collaborate with Production Planners and Shop Floor Managers to troubleshoot live BOM/routing errors blocking order releases
- Support Finance and Cost Accounting teams during cost roll-ups and standard costing to ensure accurate component valuation and reliable labor standards
- Train production and planning staff on proper use of BOM/routing structures
- Serve as a subject matter expert on ERP manufacturing data structures
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Supply Chain, Management Information Systems (MIS), or related field (or equivalent experience)
- 2–5+ years of hands-on experience in a manufacturing environment creating/maintaining BOMs (or MBOMs), routings, and labor standards
- Experience with ERP systems required (SAP strongly preferred; Oracle, Infor, Epicor, NetSuite, or similar also considered)
Technical Competencies
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, work center flow, and shop-floor operations
- Proficiency in time study methods (stopwatch time study, MTM/MOST, or predetermined time systems)
- SAP PP (Production Planning) and SAP MM (Materials Management) fluency preferred; experience with SAP PLM or S/4HANA PEO (including VEMP) a major plus
- Proficiency with standard BOM transactions (e.g., CS01/CS02/CS03) and multi-level explosions (e.g., CS11/CS12/CS13) a plus
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (VLOOKUP, Pivot Tables, Text-to-Columns) for data staging, cleansing, and analysis
- Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement methodologies preferred
Soft Skills
- Uncompromising attention to detail and data accuracy — precision with decimals, units of measure, and sequencing where minor errors could halt production
- Strong communication skills; able to translate rigid system rules for engineers and operational realities for IT/planning teams
- Analytical mindset with strong problem-solving ability
Preferred
- Experience with cost roll-ups and standard costing
- APICS/CPIM certification a plus
- Experience supporting new product launches or engineering change management
Work Environment
- Combination of office and manufacturing floor environment
- Occasional travel between facilities, if applicable
