PRODUCTION MANAGER -SUMMER FLOWERS

Our member who is in the floriculture industry business located in Naivasha seeks to fill the position of Production Manager -Summer Flowers, that has arisen in their company. The position reports to the Farm Manager / Deputy General Manager.



KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

1) To take responsibility and control of over all activities taking place on the greens (ruscus, leather leaves, asparagus (Setaciuos,plumosus nanua, densiflorous sprengeri, falcatus) virgatus,rosemary,eucalyptus etc, gypsophilla and overall workers involved in those activities, and to ensure the welfare of all staff in your department.


2) To oversee and work closely with Production department HODs to ensure that all targets regarding production and material inputs per square meter are monitored and achieved on a timely basis with no compromise in crop quality or productivity.


3) To oversee and work closely with the Pack House HOD to monitor and continuously reduce the rates of preventable rejections and number of complaints from the Market and from the Pack House year on year.


4) To strive to maintain the number of man-hours per stem produced constant month on month, and to achieve a reduction in the number of man-hours per stem produced year on year with no compromise in production and quality.


5) To continuously monitor and improve farm performance with respect to set company level Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).


6) To work with Human Resource Manager and Assistant HOD’s in setting and achieving goals and objectives, in order to realize significant improvement year on year in production efficiency with no compromise in cost, quality, and delivery.


7) To work with Human Resource Department in ensuring accurate and up to date documentation of all farm level operations to reflect ‘Best Practice’, such that all statutory and regulatory requirements are fully adhered to where required, and to ensure near 0% deviation from company level Standard Operating Procedures.


8) To prepare monthly budgets and forecasts in conjunction with farm/Deputy general manager for production and all materials and resource consumption, and to monitor and ensure that actual consumption remains within the rate of the budgeted consumption.


9) Liaising with supervisors and quality controllers to coordinate leave and off days to ensure optimum workforce level is attained without interruption to daily operations.


10) Ensuring planting takes place on time and in efficient manner by liaising with HOD spray/Maintenance and Fertigation to ensure acceptable standards and the correct practices are carried out.


11) To ensure all diseases are monitored and reported in time to the HOD spray and the necessary action is taken to minimize the cost.


12) To train all field workers on induction, job relations, job instructions and all company SOPs relevant to field activities.


13) To maintain high level of discipline and good industrial relations among the Production workers.


14) To accept to be trained and work in any other area of company operations at the discretion of the management.


15) To do or carry out any ad hoc duties that may be given to you at any time depending on the company’s operation’s needs.

17) Irrigation/Fertigation: You will instruct, control and guide supervisors for irrigation in ensuring that all production procedures and systems including but not limited to proper irrigation, fertigation and overall control of the function of irrigation/fertigation.


18) Labour requisitions: You are charged with the responsibility of requisitioning labour in close consultations with the senior supervisors/supervisors which requisitions will then be actioned by the human resource department.


19) Transport: You will ensure that harvested crops are deployed to the cold room not later than 30 minutes after harvesting and in doing so you will closely monitor the activities and timeliness of the transport function. You will be held responsible for any product deterioration should timely relocation of harvested products to the cold room occur. You will also take charge of all other logistical operations on the farm and especially emergency and usual transportation needs, especially where the administration office is closed



Irrigation & Spray

1) To take responsibility and control over all activities taking place in irrigation and spray and all workers involved in those activities, and to ensure the welfare of all staff in your department. That all spray and irrigation data are updated and communicated to relevant people.

2) To ensure controlled application of water resources for plant use and other uses on the farm economically in a sustainable way as well as the application of fertilizer, soil improvement products and any other soluble products in the irrigation system.

3) To ensure that all irrigation and spray equipment are up and working, well maintained with clear preventive maintenance strategies. Always ensure that the maintenance protocol put in place is followed religiously and records thereof kept. It will be your responsibility to maintain a record of all tools and equipment in the two departments, issues and control thereof.

4) To ensure that there is minimal water wastage. In doing this you will make sure that all piping systems are maintained and the recycle network is functional in an efficient manner. You will regularly inspect the dam and make sure that lining is not leaking that the dam bed is clear of silt and other debris. All drainage systems will have to be cleaned and functionally acceptable.

5) You will develop and put in place an irrigation and fertigation schedule and spray program together with the Production manager and ensure that the correct times of fertigation, irrigation and spray are followed without failure.

6) In conjunction and consultation with the operations manager as well as the farm manager and stores, you will place requisitions for subject items and ensure that stocks are sufficient to cover purchase lead times to avoid lack of input and equipment.

7) You will be expected to ensure that supervisors keep and maintain inspectable records of all irrigation, fertigation and spray activities on the farm in terms of quantities and ratios applied. These records must be able to demonstrate how deficiencies in plants, pest and diseases are regularly countered.


Desired Qualifications, skills and experience;

1) A bachelor’s degree in agriculture, Horticulture, or a related field.

2) A minimum of 5 years’ progressive managerial experience in a relevant commercial production environment.

3) Demonstrable technical and operational experience in summer flower production.

4) Strong leadership and people-management capabilities, with the ability to effectively manage and develop large teams.

5) Proven ability to work independently, manage demanding production schedules, and consistently deliver against challenging targets.

6) Strong planning, problem-solving, communication, and decision-making skills.

7) A results-oriented approach, with the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced agricultural production environment.
