The Director of Surveying will oversee field and office survey production, review and approve technical deliverables, provide professional guidance to surveying personnel, and maintain accountability for surveying services performed under their responsible charge. The individual may also serve as the qualifying principal officer for ARCXIS's Florida surveying business authorization if formally designated in accordance with applicable law.
The ideal candidate combines extensive Florida surveying expertise, strong technical leadership, sound professional judgment, and the ability to support efficient residential survey operations without compromising professional standards or regulatory requirements.
Primary Responsibilities
Professional Responsible Charge and Regulatory Compliance
• Exercise actual responsible charge over assigned surveying and mapping services in accordance with Florida Statutes Chapter 472 and Florida Administrative Code Chapter 5J-17.
• Maintain an active, unrestricted Florida Professional Surveyor and Mapper (PSM) license in good standing, including all required continuing education.
• Serve as the qualifying principal officer or other designated qualifying professional for ARCXIS's Florida surveying business authorization if formally appointed.
• Exercise independent professional judgment and maintain appropriate supervision, direction, and control over professional surveying work performed under the individual's responsible charge.
• Review, approve, sign, date, and seal professional surveying documents only when permitted by Florida law and when sufficient professional oversight and review have been exercised.
• Ensure professional surveying services comply with applicable state and local laws, technical standards, regulatory requirements, and professional obligations.
• Maintain exclusive control over the individual's professional seal, digital signature, and associated credentials.
• Identify and require correction of technical deficiencies and decline to approve or seal work that fails to satisfy applicable legal or professional requirements.
• Promptly disclose any licensing deficiencies, restrictions, investigations, disciplinary actions, or other circumstances materially affecting professional responsibilities.
Surveying Operations and Technical Oversight
• Direct and oversee the technical execution of residential boundary, construction, topographic, as-built, form-board, foundation, final, and related surveys.
• Provide professional supervision and technical direction to field crews, survey technicians, drafting personnel, and other assigned production staff.
• Review surveying methods, field measurements, control networks, calculations, plats, legal descriptions, easements, title information, and construction plans.
• Establish and maintain appropriate technical review procedures, quality controls, and documentation practices for work performed under responsible charge.
• Evaluate and resolve complex boundary, monumentation, construction layout, control, and other surveying discrepancies.
• Ensure survey deliverables are accurate, complete, properly documented, and compliant with applicable professional standards.
• Coordinate with internal field, drafting, production, and management teams to support project schedules and client deliverables.
• Provide hands-on technical and production support when necessary while maintaining appropriate professional supervision and oversight.
• Identify and implement improvements to surveying procedures, technical workflows, and quality assurance practices.
Leadership and Professional Accountability
• Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and training to surveying personnel regarding Florida surveying requirements, field procedures, and professional standards.
• Communicate professional requirements, technical concerns, and corrective actions to management and production teams.
• Exercise professional authority over surveying methods, technical supervision, regulatory compliance, quality review, and the approval of professional work.
• Coordinate with company leadership to ensure appropriate personnel, records, resources, and information are available to fulfill responsible-charge obligations.
• Maintain professional independence in technical decisions, including decisions involving the approval, signing, and sealing of survey documents.
• Support operational planning and production objectives while ensuring that business considerations do not override professional or regulatory obligations.
• Maintain current knowledge of Florida surveying laws, industry technologies, equipment, and professional standards.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities
• Review field notes, survey calculations, drafting documents, and final deliverables for technical accuracy and completeness.
• Support the development and maintenance of standardized surveying procedures, technical templates, review checklists, and documentation practices.
• Assist with evaluating surveying equipment, software, coordinate systems, and field-to-office processes.
• Coordinate with company leadership regarding technical compliance concerns, staffing needs, and professional responsibilities.
• Maintain and safeguard required survey records, project documentation, and professionally signed and sealed materials.
• Support the orderly transition of active projects, technical responsibilities, outstanding deliverables, and professional records when responsibilities change.
• Cooperate in transferring responsible charge to another appropriately licensed professional when required, ensuring continuity in accordance with Florida law.
• Perform other related duties consistent with the position's professional authority, licensing obligations, and assigned responsibilities.

However, the Director of Surveying maintains independent professional authority regarding surveying methods, technical supervision, regulatory compliance, quality assurance, and the use of the individual's professional seal.
