Position Purpose:

As the Project Engineer, the individual will apply engineering fundamentals and developing project management skills while contributing to the planning, monitoring and control of capital projects across each of the following management areas: Scope, Budget and Time.

The Project Engineer will provide project and design support to the Project Manager or Senior Project Manager and to the wider project team, so that specified project requirements are implemented to specification, time, quality and within budget, through to a successful handover to the end user. This is an entry level position within the Kankakee Project Engineering department. The individual will receive structured coaching and mentoring from experienced engineers and project managers while building capability in the delivery of capital projects within a GMP manufacturing environment.

Role that this position reports to: Head of Project Engineering, Kankakee.

This position can be delegated to: Associate Directors or Senior Project Managers

Main Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Support the delivery of project tasks in a way that creates a safe, healthy and secure workplace for the staff and contractors involved in implementing projects, and for those who will use the facilities created or modified by these projects.
  • Participate actively in the coaching, mentoring and development opportunities provided by the Project Engineering team and assist in improving CSL’s project management practice.

Strengthen and grow our business:

  • Support the delivery of project tasks in a way that recognizes GMP and the need to actively manage the risk of non-compliance.
  • Contribute to the planning and coordination of plant shutdown activities.
  • Contribute to the development of operational and maintenance manuals and training materials.

Successful execution of our projects:

  • Support project activities as part of a team managed by a Project Manager and/or Senior Project Manager.
  • With guidance, take ownership of defined work packages and small, low complexity projects, growing in scope of responsibility as capability develops.
  • Under the direction of the assigned Project Manager or Senior Project Manager:
    • assist in developing the technical design and the qualification and commissioning documentation for the project.
    • assist in producing specifications, drawings and other documentation that comprise the technical requirements for inclusion in tenders and contracts.
    • support the execution of commissioning and qualification activities in the field.
    • report any deviations identified during commissioning and qualification to the Project Manager and/or Senior Project Manager.
  • Assist in the preparation of Capital Expenditure Proposals, as instructed.
  • Raise and administer purchase orders for the supply of goods and services.
  • Assist in preparing key project management documents, including schedules, cost tracking and progress reports.
  • Provide assistance as directed in maintaining the configuration management system during project activities.
  • Support the planning and field coordination of construction activities, including contractor walkdowns and verification of work in progress.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with external consultants and contractors to aid in the delivery of project design and construction activities.

Operational excellence and continuous improvement:

  • Complete assigned project tasks from start to finish so that they are delivered to scope, within budget and on time, while achieving zero harm, delivering the identified returns and meeting cash flow requirements.

Position Qualifications and Experience Requirements

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Sciences.
  • This is an entry level position.

Technical Expertise

  • Foundational understanding of engineering concepts, tools, technologies and design techniques, gained through academic coursework, internships, co-op assignments or capstone projects.
  • Working knowledge of one engineering discipline, with the ability to apply engineering fundamentals to problems in design, testing and start up.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and documents such as P&IDs, general arrangement drawings and single line diagrams, or a demonstrated ability to learn them quickly.
  • An aptitude for troubleshooting and process engineering, together with a willingness to learn how end user requirements are translated into technical solutions.

Experience

  • No prior industry experience is required. Internship, co-op, capstone or undergraduate research experience in a manufacturing, process or laboratory environment is required.
  • Exposure to a GxP, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, food or chemical process environment is an advantage but is not a requirement.
  • Any experience contributing to a project where scope, schedule and budget were tracked, including academic team projects, is valued.

Knowledge & Attributes

  • Awareness of project management principles, with a clear interest in building capability in scope, schedule, cost and risk management.
  • A general understanding of quality management systems and procedures.
  • A general understanding of risk management methodology and processes.
  • An interest in developing knowledge of contract management and administration.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence to interact with contractors, operations personnel and support functions in the field.
  • Proficiency in MS-Excel, MS-Word, MS-PowerPoint and MS-Outlook, with the ability to learn MS-Project and MS-Visio.
  • A general understanding and application of GxP principles.
  • Exposure to Lean or Six Sigma principles and structured problem solving is a plus.
  • A safety-first mindset, strong attention to detail, and the willingness to spend a significant portion of the working day in manufacturing and construction areas.

Job Environment

  • General working hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. On occasion, extended hours, evening or weekend work may be required to meet project priorities and objectives, including support of planned shutdowns.
  • Project responsibilities will require the Project Engineer to spend the majority of their time between the field and the office environment. Field time is spent within production and service plant areas, supporting contractors in the performance of their duties, performing commissioning activities and verifying work in progress. The Project Engineer may also be required to visit equipment suppliers for shop audits and technical reviews, or to visit engineering workshops to inspect fabrication in progress. Access to manufacturing areas requires the use of appropriate personal protective equipment and compliance with site gowning and area access requirements.

The expected base salary range for this position at hiring is $89,000 - $105,000. Please note this salary range reflects the minimum and maximum base pay that CSL expects to pay for this position at the listed location as of the time of this posting. Individual base salary for a successful candidate is determined by qualifications, skill level, experience, competencies and other relevant factors. In addition to base salary, total compensation for this role may also include incentive compensation and equity.
