The successful candidate will have experience preparing highway and roadway design plans, specifications, cost estimates, and maintenance of traffic plans in accordance with applicable state and federal standards. As part of multidisciplinary project teams, this individual will coordinate design efforts, contribute to project delivery, and work with clients and public agencies.

This role offers the opportunity to expand technical expertise and judgment while taking greater ownership of project coordination and deliverables. Working closely with Project Managers, the Project Engineer will help manage schedules and budgets, provide technical guidance to junior staff, and support proposal and business development efforts.

Highway & Traffic Engineering & Project Experience

FPA’s Highway & Traffic Department provides design and engineering services for transportation projects, including geometric design, grading, drainage coordination, and maintenance of traffic planning.

The Project Engineer – Highway & Traffic will oversee assigned technical work and coordinate across disciplines to deliver county and municipal projects, including those supported by state or federal funding. This role will involve increasingly complex assignments and greater responsibility for project coordination, schedules, budgets, and deliverables.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and oversee roadway and highway design plans, specifications, and cost estimates.

• Perform geometric design, grading, drainage coordination, and maintenance of traffic plans.

• Coordinate with internal disciplines including civil/site, traffic, structural, environmental, and utility teams.

• Assist in managing project schedules, budgets, and deliverables.

• Serve as a technical resource for junior engineers and designers.

• Attend client meetings and coordinate with public agencies including state agencies, counties, and municipalities.

• Ensure compliance with state and federal design standards and procedures.

• Support proposal preparation and business development efforts as needed.


Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.

• 4–8 years of progressive highway/roadway design experience.

• Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of New Jersey required.

• Experience working on county and/or municipal projects, including those that are state or federally funded.

• Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D and/or MicroStation (OpenRoads experience a plus).

• Strong knowledge of AASHTO and NJDOT roadway design standards.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Benefits

Benefit packages for this role will start on the 1st day of employment and include medical, dental, and vision insurance, as well as HSA, FSA, and DCFSA account options, and 401k retirement plans. Employees in this role are also entitled to paid sick leave and/or other paid time off as provided by applicable law.

Compensation

The projected compensation range for this position is $90,000 to $115,000. Actual compensation will depend on factors including experience, education, qualifications, and skill set. FPA recognizes and rewards performance through an annual bonus program.
