About the Opportunity
Thermal Devices is hiring a Project Estimator & Technical Sales Specialist to join our team in Mount Airy, Maryland. This is a full-time, 100% on-site position. Candidates must currently live within a reasonable daily commuting distance of Mount Airy. This position is not available for remote or hybrid work.
This role combines technical estimating, project support, and customer interaction. You will review construction drawings, specifications, and project requirements; prepare takeoffs, estimates, quotations, and technical proposals; and work directly with contractors, engineers, customers, manufacturers, and internal teams to develop industrial heat tracing solutions.
You do not need previous heat tracing experience. We are looking for someone with strong technical aptitude, attention to detail, and the ability to understand drawings, specifications, and project requirements. Candidates with backgrounds in construction estimating, electrical or mechanical systems, engineering, project coordination, industrial distribution, technical sales, or related technical fields are encouraged to apply.
What You'll Do
As a Project Estimator & Technical Sales Specialist, you will support customer projects from initial inquiry and bid review through estimating, quotation, and project execution while developing the technical knowledge needed to become a trusted resource for customers.
You will:
- Review construction drawings, specifications, bid documents, and project requirements.
- Perform material takeoffs and prepare project estimates for industrial heat tracing applications.
- Prepare quotations, bids, and technical proposals based on customer and project requirements.
- Assist customers with product selection, system recommendations, and application questions.
- Work directly with contractors, engineers, industrial customers, and other project stakeholders to understand project requirements and recommend solutions.
- Coordinate with manufacturers and suppliers regarding product selection, pricing, availability, lead times, and technical requirements.
- Maintain accurate project documentation, estimate records, quotations, and customer communications.
- Follow estimates and quotations through the sales cycle.
- Support project execution to help ensure customer requirements are met and projects remain on schedule.
- Develop and maintain relationships with contractors, engineers, industrial customers, and distribution partners.
- Identify opportunities to grow existing customer relationships and support new business opportunities.
- Participate in customer meetings, project reviews, and occasional site visits as needed.
- Provide technical product and application support to customers and internal teams.
- Collaborate with Sales, Operations, Customer Service, manufacturers, and suppliers to support successful project execution.
- Develop in-depth knowledge of Thermal Devices' heat tracing products, manufacturers, and applications.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field preferred.
- Candidates with relevant construction estimating, project estimating, project coordination, technical sales, industrial distribution, engineering, or related technical experience will also be considered.
- Strong technical aptitude and interest in understanding industrial mechanical and electrical systems.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and technical documents.
- Experience with material takeoffs, estimating, or construction documentation is preferred.
- Strong numerical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Comfortable communicating directly with customers, contractors, engineers, manufacturers, and suppliers.
- Ability to manage multiple estimates, projects, priorities, and deadlines.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience with estimating/takeoff software and CRM or ERP systems is preferred.
- Experience with heat tracing, electrical systems, industrial heating, controls, or related products is a plus but not required.
