Project Superintendent- Shipyard
Job Summary
Manage and coordinate ship repair and maintenance projects, ensuring timely execution, compliance with quality and safety standards, and effective resource allocation to meet vessel turnaround schedules in a dynamic shipyard environment.
Responsibilities
- Manage daily execution of ship repair and maintenance projects from vessel arrival to completion and departure to ensure timely delivery
- Coordinate hull, structural, mechanical, piping, electrical, blasting/painting, and other repair activities to maintain project workflow
- Plan and allocate manpower, materials, equipment, and subcontractor resources to optimize project efficiency
- Monitor project progress, productivity, schedule, and vessel turnaround time to identify and address delays
- Coordinate with shipowners, vessel crew, Class surveyors, and third-party inspectors to ensure project compliance and communication
- Manage subcontractors to enforce adherence to project, quality, and Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) requirements
- Identify additional repair works, coordinate technical assessments, and obtain client approval for variations to control scope changes
- Coordinate inspections, testing, commissioning, punch-list clearance, and final handover to meet contractual obligations
- Collaborate with QA/QC teams to ensure compliance with drawings, specifications, Class requirements, and approved procedures
- Enforce shipyard HSE/Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) requirements, including controls for hot work, confined space, lifting, and work-at-height
- Prepare daily progress reports, manpower reports, look-ahead schedules, and project status updates to maintain stakeholder visibility
- Identify project risks, delays, and constraints, implementing recovery actions to maintain schedule and quality standards
Required competencies and certifications
- Diploma or Degree in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture, Shipbuilding, Offshore Engineering, or related discipline
- Minimum 5 years of relevant shipyard experience
- Strong hands-on experience in ship repair, maintenance, conversion, or marine/offshore projects
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and repair specifications
Preferred competencies and qualifications
- Knowledge of hull/structural, mechanical, piping, and general ship repair activities
- Experience managing subcontractors, manpower, and multiple work fronts
- Familiarity with shipyard production methods, Class requirements, and marine repair standards
- Planning, coordination, problem-solving, and client-management skills
- Ability to work under tight vessel turnaround schedules and in a fast-paced shipyard environment
