Protection and Controls Engineer

You will design, implement, commission, and maintain protection and control systems across electrical infrastructure. You will develop diagrams and relay settings, conduct protection studies and tests, analyze fault records, integrate systems with monitoring platforms, maintain configuration records, and support field work during outages and troubleshooting.

Responsibilities

• Develop protection philosophy, electrical diagrams, control schematics, wiring diagrams, and relay panel layouts
• Calculate, implement, and maintain protective relay settings and logic
• Specify relays, transformers, trip circuits, lockout schemes, protection schemes, and communications-assisted schemes
• Perform short-circuit, coordination, and arc-flash studies
• Commission protection systems through functional checks, injection tests, scheme tests, and timing checks
• Collect and analyze fault and disturbance records
• Maintain settings databases, as-left files, and relay firmware and configuration control
• Integrate protection systems with SCADA, RTUs, and facility monitoring
• Support NERC PRC evidence and testing
• Work with technicians, operators, and contractors during outages, switching, and troubleshooting
• Apply applicable IEEE, NESC, and NFPA standards

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or another engineering discipline
• 3+ years of protection and controls experience on medium- or high-voltage systems
• Ability to perform hands-on work in heat, cold, rain, tight quarters, or at heights
• Ability to work extended hours and weekends as needed
• Ability to work safely in hazardous environments while wearing PPE
• Ability to lift up to 25 pounds unassisted
• Ability to provide 24/7 on-call emergency support
• Willingness to work on-site in Memphis, Tennessee
• Ability to travel up to 25%
• Valid driver's license
