Summary

Software engineer on a small product team modernizing critical aviation software, working the full SDLC (design, development, testing, deployment, production support). Heavy focus on directing and validating AI coding agents in production, using Python, cloud, CI/CD, and automated testing. Pays $70-90K USD annually.

A client is looking for a Software Engineer to join a small, collaborative product team focused on modernizing critical aviation software. This engineer will work across the full software development lifecycle, including design, development, testing, deployment, integration, and production support.

A major focus of this role is using AI-assisted development and coding agents within real production environments. The ideal candidate is a strong software engineer who can break down complex problems, effectively direct AI coding tools, evaluate generated code, and ensure solutions meet production standards for quality, security, maintainability, and reliability.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and support production software.
  • Modernize and integrate software within complex existing systems.
  • Use AI coding agents for development, refactoring, debugging, testing, migrations, and codebase exploration.
  • Break ambiguous requirements into clear technical tasks, acceptance criteria, and deliverables.
  • Review and validate AI-generated code for quality, architecture, security, performance, and maintainability.
  • Build appropriate automated testing and verification around software changes.
  • Work within cloud environments and established CI/CD processes.
  • Identify technical risks, dependencies, and architectural tradeoffs.
  • Participate in code reviews, production support, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Must-Haves

  • Strong software engineering experience with Python or another general-purpose programming language.
  • Experience designing, developing, and supporting production software.
  • Hands-on experience using coding agents or AI-assisted development tools to make meaningful changes within real software systems.
  • Ability to break down complex or ambiguous engineering problems into structured development tasks.
  • Experience reviewing and improving AI-generated code rather than relying on generated output without validation.
  • Strong understanding of testing, CI/CD, observability, security, source control, and production operations.
  • Experience working in cloud environments and integrating with existing systems.
  • Strong technical judgment and communication skills.

Plusses

  • Experience building or improving agentic software development workflows.
  • Experience coordinating multiple coding agents or using agents for larger refactors and migrations.
  • Experience modernizing complex or legacy production systems.
  • Full-stack or multi-layer software development experience.
  • Experience within regulated, safety-critical, or high-reliability environments.
  • Aviation software experience or aviation-domain knowledge.

This position will pay $70-90K Annually (USD)
