Python Software Engineer - Tier One Proprietary Trading Firm - Sydney

I'm working with a Tier One proprietary trading firm in Sydney hiring an experienced Python software engineer to build the systems that sit behind their trading.

This is a hands-on individual contributor role. You'll write production Python across trading infrastructure, research and simulation platforms, data pipelines, post-trade analysis, and the tooling traders and researchers rely on every day. The data volumes are large, the systems are critical, and the work ships into production quickly.

You'll work directly with traders, researchers and C++ engineers to turn ideas into reliable, well-engineered systems. There's no ticket queue or product manager sitting in between.

Why this firm:

Some of the best engineers on the planet work here. The hierarchy is flat and everyone is technical, from the top down. There are no layers of management to hide behind and no politics. If you're good, it's visible straight away.
You'll own your systems end to end. There are no external customers and no product roadmap set by sales. The only customer is the trading business. The technology budget is effectively unlimited, so if the right hardware or tooling makes the work better, you get it.

Compensation is market-leading, paid as base salary plus bonus, all in cash. There's no diluted equity, no paper options and no waiting years for a liquidity event that may never come.

Relocation:

Full relocation and visa sponsorship are available for the right candidate. The firm is particularly interested in hearing from Australian expats looking to come home, and from anyone with a genuine reason to settle in Sydney.

What they're looking for:

Strong Python with several years of production software engineering, including clean design, testing and performance. Experience working with large datasets and the scientific Python stack, such as NumPy and pandas, or similar tools. A good grounding in Linux and distributed systems. C++ familiarity is useful but not essential. Experience in trading, market data or high-performance data systems is a strong advantage.

Above all, they want engineers who write precise, reliable code and take genuine ownership of what they ship.
This role won't suit people whose Python experience is mainly scripting, web CRUD or notebook-only analysis, consultants, contractors or anyone with a run of short tenures. It suits software engineers who want hard problems and direct, measurable impact.
