QA Automation Engineer

Open 23d

Summary

Senior QA Automation Engineer builds and maintains automated tests for a UK-based diabetes management app, integrating with glucose monitors, insulin pumps, and wearables in a hybrid Cambridge office role.

We are looking for a Senior QA Automation Engineer to join a UK medical technology company based in Cambridge. The company specializes in advanced solutions for diabetes management.

This is permanent employment. The work format is hybrid (the QA Engineer is required to attend the office in Cambridge once per week, preferably more often, though this can be discussed directly).

Role Purpose and Primary Objectives:

As a QA Automation Engineer, you will help to improve the lives of people with diabetes worldwide by working on our Class III CE, UKCA-marked, and FDA-approved app. By linking to both a continuous glucose monitor and an insulin pump, we feed the user’s real-time glucose level into our cutting-edge algorithm to seamlessly instruct the pump how much insulin to deliver to optimize our user’s blood sugar. This has been shown through a number of landmark studies to improve diabetic control while also reducing the life-changing workload of managing this lifelong condition.

Our rapidly growing App is one of the leading systems for Type-1 diabetes, used in 19 countries and translated into 12 languages. You will join a growing, cross-functional team working across the full lifecycle, from feature ideation through release, iteration, and maintenance, with an emphasis on owning the end-to-end delivery of features and tasks.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Take ownership of the end-to-end QA process and gradually take over testing responsibilities from the founder of the company.

  • Develop a strong understanding of the healthcare product, Type 1 diabetes workflows, insulin pumps, glucose sensors, and real user scenarios.

  • Understand and test both Android and iOS applications, including platform-specific functionality and different application versions.

  • Define the testing strategy and initially perform manual testing to understand critical product flows.

  • Identify and prioritize the most important areas for automation.

  • Design, build, and maintain an automated testing framework from scratch.

  • Automate functional and regression testing across mobile applications, Bluetooth integrations, Apple Watch, pumps, sensors, and physical devices.

  • Integrate automated tests into the existing CI/CD pipeline, regularly execute test suites, and analyze results.

  • Maintain automated tests as application functionality, supported devices, and business requirements change.

  • Coordinate internal, external, and user acceptance testing before releases.

  • Act as the primary quality owner, maintain testing documentation, communicate defects and risks, and confirm product readiness for release.

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Minimum 5+ years of commercial QA Automation experience.

  • Experience building automation frameworks from scratch.

  • Strong knowledge of native Android and iOS testing, including Java/Kotlin and Swift ecosystems.

  • Mandatory hands-on experience testing Bluetooth/BLE connections with physical devices.

  • Experience integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines.

  • Ability to define the QA strategy, prioritize automation, and independently own the full testing process.

Desirable:

  • Experience testing AWS-based backend integrations.

  • Healthcare, medical device, IoT, or hardware-connected product experience.

  • Experience with pumps, sensors, wearables, or Apple Watch integrations.

  • Experience maintaining physical device test environments.

  • Knowledge of regulated product testing and healthcare documentation requirements.

  • Experience working as the only QA specialist in a small product team.

Benefits:

  • Generous Employer Pension contribution.

  • Private Medical Insurance.

  • Life Assurance.

  • Annual discretionary bonus.

  • 29 days annual leave plus 8 days Bank Holidays.

  • Opportunity to work on groundbreaking technology that has the potential to transform diabetes management and improve patient outcomes.

  • Collaborative and dynamic work environment.

  • Competitive salary and benefits package, including opportunities for professional development and career advancement.

Recruitment stages:

  1. Pre-screen interview with the Recruitment Manager.

  2. Client pre-screen Interview with the Director of Technical Development.

  3. Technical Interview conducted by the client.
