Summary

QA/Test Engineer at Hope Street Group, an EdTech non-profit building AI-powered career-exploration classroom experiences for grades 5-12. Day to day you run thousands of high-risk AI playthrough tests for safety, correctness, value, and compliance, wielding AI to retest misses and escalate issues. USA remote on PST hours.

Compensation: $96k – $145k • No equity

Hope Street, a registered 501(c)(3), creates educational content and a platform for students in 5th-12th grade to help them Explore, Align, and take Action on their careers.

We produce 20-30 minute classroom experiences designed to delight students and to help them make meaningful progress on their careers in a safe and judgment-free zone.

We also gather and share insights with schools about their students which help schools make informed decisions about their career programs, scholarships, and support for students.

Our goal isn’t to replace traditional career investments schools have made, it’s to help students take advantage of the great career support their schools are already offering.

80% of students that work with Hope Street at least 1 time per year say they now see significantly more value in school.

We are early in our product journey, but have several districts that we work with.

We are a team of 5, USA remote, working with schools primarily in California, but planning to expand to our second state this year. We generally work PST hours.

Occasional travel is expected and needed to be effective in this role.

We’re hiring a Quality Engineer for a few reasons:

  • Endurance. AI breadth creates increased testing demands. Hope Street maintains educational quests with tens of thousands of playthrough endings that require testing for safety, correctness, value, and interest. This requires a special kind of person and special skillsets that the right person has: they can happily test thousands of highly complicated, high-risk tests and, test after test, provide a consistent and valuable assessment. Someone who gets home after running 450 tests all day and had a great day at work.

  • Clarity of thought. In a world where everyone can create anything, we need a constant vigilance to what’s important, why are we building this, what is success, how do we measure it, and this person has a natural gift in helping teams drive to and articulate what the measurable outcome for things is, which naturally helps inform the tests that are run.

  • AI operator and escalator. Can wield AI to solve for and retest small misses. Someone who can understand what the goal of something is, see why the current approach is failing, then either solve it or escalate it to the team.

  • Insurance on compliance. We are sending a clear signal to our schools and company that we value ensuring our content is safe. Investing in your role provides Hope Street with additional insurance that we will prevent school compliance risks.

I believe that in a post-AI world startups should hire QA engineering much earlier.

Core Experience Requirements:

  • Has tested AI products before (chatbots, character generators, AI insights reports, etc.)
  • Was responsible for the core testing efforts on a product that reached 1M+ users
  • Has been responsible for providing testing in a highly compliant environment
  • Has worked with AI in some meaningful capacity
  • Has some working knowledge of UI, UX, and Engineering
  • At least 5 years in a role where the company relies on your skills as a QA/Test Engineer
  • Worked in a fully remote US-based startup

More about our values:

  • Trust: Time is short, honesty is important to us. We seek to build trust and to be beacons of trust. (For example: if you use AI to apply and are not upfront about using AI you will be disqualified! AI usage in our interview process is generally ok though!)

  • Accountability: You share the wins/losses, but you also are clear about your failed experiments.

  • Empathy: You can easily, and deeply, enjoy seeing life through many people’s perspectives. Because of this you are also open to many interpretations and ideas.

Pay philosophy: We pay the 75th percentile of levels.fyi for any given role and level, but as a non-profit we do not have the concept of equity. We have generally done a yearly bonus depending on how well Hope Street has done as a company. Generally it is not a large amount, but not insignificant. We are currently planning for a potential hire at mid-career, senior, or staff.

Performance philosophy: At the end of the day we are prioritizing our time, energy, and money into you and this role. We generally benchmark employees based on what the market could provide in exchange for that same time, energy, and money. If you are creating an outsized return on value for our students, we’ll make every effort to prioritize more time, energy, and money for you (speaking events, personal coaches, mentoring, publications, whatever you need).

Hope Street is a registered 501(c)(3). We offer benefits including:

Competitive Medical & Dental Plans Competitive Retirement account and matching Modern Laptop and tooling Mandatory minimum 2 weeks PTO (no maximum so long as you are performing)
