Quality Inspector - CWI
Description
Job Summary:
The AWS CWI will play a key role in ensuring welding activities meet all applicable codes, standards, and project requirements. This individual will be responsible for maintaining weld documentation, conducting inspections, and supporting the training and development of welders. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, knowledgeable in AWS standards, and passionate about continuous improvement in welding practices.
In addition to welding inspection, this role supports the broader quality team with receiving, in process, and final inspections of fabricated components and assemblies. We’re looking for a collaborative team player who sees welders, operators, and fellow inspectors as partners in building a quality product.
Key Responsibilities
• Perform visual and dimensional inspection of welds in accordance with AWS codes, customer drawings, and project specifications
• Witness and administer welder performance qualification tests and document welder qualifications per applicable AWS codes
• Maintain accurate records of inspections, welder performance qualification records (WPQRs), and procedure qualification records (PQRs)
• Develop, update, and manage welding documentation, including Welding Procedure Specifications (WPSs) and welder continuity logs
• Provide technical support and training to welders to ensure compliance with welding procedures and standards
• Collaborate with Engineering, Quality, and Operations to resolve welding-related issues
• Perform receiving, in-process, and final inspections of non-welded features, including dimensions, fit-up, assembly, hardware, and finish/coating, per drawings and customer requirements
• Document nonconformances, identify and segregate nonconforming material, and support disposition and corrective action
• Work cooperatively with production to resolve quality issues on the floor promptly, with a focus on solving problems rather than only identifying them
• Cross-train with and provide coverage for other Quality team members as workload and priorities require
• Ensure adherence to safety and quality standards throughout welding and inspection operations
• Support internal and external audits related to welding, fabrication, and quality
Qualifications
• AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) required; must maintain active certification, including AWS recertification and vision examination requirements
• 3+ years of welding inspection, welding, or quality inspection experience in a fabrication or manufacturing environment, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
• Working knowledge of AWS codes and standards (D1.1, D1.3, and others as applicable)
• Experience writing and reviewing Welding Procedure Specifications (WPSs) and Procedure Qualification Records (PQRs)
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and welding symbols
• Proficiency with inspection and measuring tools, including weld gauges, calipers, and tape measures
• Communication skills to support welder training and work effectively with production and engineering
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with quality management software preferred
• Ability and willingness to perform inspection and quality tasks outside of welding as needed
