Job description

A quantity surveyor is responsible for managing project costs by estimating quantities, materials, labor, and timelines from initial design through completion. They prepare cost plans, tender documents, and budgets, while analyzing variations, claims, and contractor payments to ensure accuracy and value for money. The role involves tracking project changes, reviewing invoices, and collaborating with project teams to deliver cost-effective solutions. Through regular reporting and cost analysis, the quantity surveyor helps control budgets, mitigate risks, and support successful project delivery.

Helping to estimate costs, material quantities, and project timelines. A key part of the role will be to liaise with a range of other teams working on the project, helping it to stay on track.

At projects’ initial stage, study drawings and specifications for new projects to calculate the quantity of materials, costs, labor, and time required for the build. Provide early cost advice, to budget and benchmark the project, and to prepare life cycle cost plans.

Support preparation of tender and contract documents – this can include bills of quantities with the client and consultant(s).

Undertake cost analysis for variations and claims, advise on contractual claims and disputes.

Value completed work and arrange payments. Make sure clients get value for money on the project.

Prepare and submit cost estimates and budgets for projects, conduct studies to estimate materials, time, and labor costs. Continually analyze outcomes and write budget reports.

Track changes to the design and construction work and adjust budget projections accordingly.

Review and analyze contractor and supplier invoices to ensure accuracy and compliance with contractual obligations.

Collaborate with project managers, architects, and engineers to develop cost-effective solutions and resolve any issues that may arise during construction.

Prepare and present regular reports to management, providing updates on project costs, budget variances, and potential risks.

Stay up to date with industry trends and developments and incorporate best practices into cost management processes.

Inform themselves of the relevant quality, environmental, safety, and occupational health policies, manuals, and procedures in place within the company, and ensure continued compliance with these requirements while employed.

Perform other duties as assigned by the line manager or supervisor.

Qualifications and experience

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited university.
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in large-scale infrastructure or city development projects.
  • Proven experience in handling contractors progress payments.
  • Experience in the construction of water and wastewater projects.
  • Knowledge of professional project management processes and procedures.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience of working internationally.
