Overview

Design and analyze ion–photon interfaces that enable scalable trapped-ion quantum computing. Develop entanglement schemes and evaluate photonic architectures, incorporating realistic experimental imperfections. You will work closely with experimental teams to translate theoretical models into implementable protocols and improve photonic interconnect performance between QPU modules. This is an ideal opportunity to apply AMO physics expertise to real-world system development in the early stages of a deep tech start-up.

Detail

  • Design ion–photon entanglement schemes including polarization and time-bin encoding
  • Evaluate trade-offs in efficiency, fidelity, and scalability across photonic coupling architectures
  • Model photon collection using integrated optical components within ion-trap platforms
  • Analyze fidelity and entanglement rates for photonic interconnects between QPU modules
  • Develop realistic infidelity sources incorporating photon loss, mode mismatch, detector inefficiency, and other non-ideal effects
  • Design entanglement distillation protocols and quantum networking schemes for modular ion-trap architectures
  • Translate theoretical models into experimentally feasible protocols and system designs
  • Collaborate with experimental teams to interpret data, define targets, and refine photonic interconnect performance

Qualifications

PhD in Physics, Quantum Optics, AMO Physics, or a closely related field (Master's candidates with exceptional AMO experience may be considered)

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated research experience in AMO physics — laser-atom interactions, cavity QED, quantum optics, or ion-trap systems
  • Strong theoretical foundation in quantum mechanics, open quantum systems, and quantum information
  • Proficiency in numerical simulation tools (Python, MATLAB, Julia, or equivalent) for quantum optical systems
