R&D Engineer II - Electrical Hardware/Embedded Systems

General Summary
As an R&D Engineer at Penumbra, you get to be hands-on, prototyping the next generation of medical devices! We are looking for someone who is excited to roll up their sleeves and relentlessly iterate on new ideas for electro-mechanical systems. You will work collaboratively to apply your passion for creative problem-solving at all stages of the design process, from concept to commercialization, which will have a profound positive impact on patients worldwide.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Play a key role in early-stage development of the next generation of Penumbra products
  • Be a pivotal team member for prototyping and designing electro-mechanical systems for novel, life-saving medical devices.
  • Own the development of the hardware and associated embedded firmware for proof-of-concept devices and prototypes.
  • Dive into first generation hardware/firmware tests at the system, device, and component level for both design exploration and validation
  • Create detailed hardware/firmware functional specifications
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support overall product development
  • Support product through pre & postproduction release including manufacturing & testing at contract manufacturers

Position Qualifications

  • A passion and knack for solving hands-on and multi-disciplinary technical design problems
  • Proven ability to thrive in a fast-paced work environment where navigating grey areas is a welcomed challenge
  • BS in electrical engineering/ computer engineering/ or related field required
  • 1+ years of experience required
  • Hands-on experience designing PCBAs including layout, schematic, prototyping and testing.
  • Hands-on experience developing firmware for hardware such as PCB, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, or similar required
  • Programming experience required, proficiency in languages such as C or C++, and Python preferred
  • Familiarity with board bring up, logic analyzer, oscilloscope, Connectivity (BLE, Bluetooth, NFC, NFMI) preferred
  • Embedded systems design, Unit testing, end to end testing on HW, communication protocols, Signal Processing, Microcontrollers (STM32, ARM Cortex M4/M7 etc.), controls algorithm (ex. PWM, PID), RTOS and/or Bare metal preferred

Working Conditions

  • General office environment. Business travel from 0% - 10%. Potential exposure to blood-borne pathogens. Requires some lifting and moving of up to 25 pounds. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, and reach with hands and arms, and to use a computer, sitting for extended periods. Specific vision abilities required by this job include the ability to read, close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

  • Annual Base Salary Range: $97,000/year - $127,000/year.
  • We offer a competitive compensation package plus a benefits and equity program, when applicable.

    Individual total compensation will vary based on factors such as qualifications, skill level, competencies, and work location.
