JOB SUMMARY: The R&D Project Engineer will work closely with engineering and technology teams collaborating research, development, and optimization of new and existing conveyor system technologies within a steel-focused material handling environment. This role combines mechanical engineering expertise with hands-on engineering, supporting prototype development, manufacturing process improvements, design validation, and product innovation. The ideal candidate has strong knowledge and experience with SolidWorks, hand assembly tools, steel fabrication, conveyor equipment, electrical controls, and cross-functional project execution.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include the following, other duties as assigned:
Research & Development
· Design, develop, and test new conveyor system components, assemblies, and innovations that improve performance, reliability, safety, and manufacturability.
· Lead prototyping efforts, including concept modeling, material selection, lab testing, and field trials.
· Conduct feasibility studies and engineering analyses (FEA, tolerance analysis, thermal effects, load calculations).
· Evaluate emerging technologies, materials (especially steel alloys), and manufacturing methods for product enhancements.
Product & Mechanical Design
· Create and revise 3D CAD models, detailed drawings, and BOMs for R&D and production release.
· Apply mechanical engineering principles to optimize dynamic systems, rotating equipment, frames, rollers, pulleys, and structural steel components.
· Ensure designs comply with industry standards (e.g., OSHA, ANSI, ISO, CEMA).
Manufacturing Process Engineering
· Partner with manufacturing teams to develop new production methods, jigs/fixtures, and quality improvements for steel-fabricated components.
· Perform root-cause analysis and implement continuous improvement solutions (Lean, Six Sigma, DFMA).
· Support automation initiatives for welding, assembly, material cutting, and final system integration.
Project Engineering & Execution
· Lead R&D project planning, scheduling, and resource management from concept through release.
· Coordinate with cross-functional teams (manufacturing, purchasing, quality, operations, and sales).
· Prepare technical documentation, test reports, and design reviews.
· Manage vendor interactions related to steel materials, fabrication processes, and specialized components.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
· This role has no direct reporting responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:
· Proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks).
· Familiarity with FEA tools (ANSYS, SolidWorks Simulation, etc.).
· Knowledge of conveyor systems, rotating machinery, power transmission, and mechanical drive components.
· Understanding of industrial manufacturing processes (welding, machining, forming, assembly).
· Experience with Lean manufacturing, DFMA, GD&T, and root-cause analysis.
· Strong problem-solving capability and analytical mindset.
· Excellent communication skills for cross-functional collaboration and documentation.
· Ability to manage multiple projects with competing priorities.
· Hands-on, proactive approach to engineering challenges.
· Successful completion of 90-day probationary period
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
· Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
· 3–7+ years of engineering experience in material handling, conveyor systems, or industrial equipment.
· Proven project engineering background, including cross-functional project leadership.
· Strong experience with steel design, fabrication, welding processes, and structural analysis.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
· Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer with frequent interaction in a manufacturing environment.
· Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds at times.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment is primarily in a pleasant, temperature-controlled, professional office environment within a manufacturing setting. The employee works in an office setting but has frequent interaction with the shop floor. On the shop floor, the employee is exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is mixed, and the air temperature fluctuates with the seasonal weather. The role also encourages hands-on involvement with equipment designs, including assembling prototypes and being proficient with hand tools and basic assembly operations.
